I made this dress. It was a modified Kwik Sew pattern. I used Organic Pima Cotton. I cut the sizing for an XL but because I dyed and wash over and over in hot water, it shrank a lot.
I needed to add a ruffle layer for length.
I made it out but it was a bit messy. This is alright for me but I want to make this dress and have the extra ruffle cut and added before dying.
I cut the width double of the width of the dress.
If I were to cot a pattern pice for this extra layer of length, what is the usual for a ruffle layer. Let's say if the skirt opening is 36", how wide would I cut the ruffle layer? And would you serge the two or sew on standard machine?
Thank you

That is cute. Can you wash and tie the material before you cut it? That way you would reduce shrinkage after it is made. As to a ruffle, the general rule is 1 1/2 times the width of the previous layer but you can add more or less depending on your preference. So if you width is 36" then it would be 36 + 18 so 54" (if I did the math right). HTH

I like the way it looks now. Preshrink then cut as Marie has suggested.

I would use the serger, but this is something you would have to test first to see which process best suits the situation.

Thank you ladies. Now what was that about a knot? Little confused with that

Is this what you are referring to? The reference to tie? I think Marie was referring to you preparing the fabric for tie-dye. Even though most people I know twist up the fabric and section off areas with rubberbands many still refer to it as tying.

However, the way the colors came out that you bleached or lightened instead of dying?

I would third the idea of dying before cutting unless you want your patterns in specific areas of your dress.

I think you did a great job. This dress is really cute! You could sell these. I'd buy one! 😊
