When do I finish a seam? Let's say I am sewing a skirt. Do I sew a side seam, press, then finish the raw edges, then press again? And then move on to the next step?

Or, do I completely assemble the garment (pressing seams as I go), finish & press the seams as a final step?

Does it matter?

What do YOU do?

FWIW...I do not have a serger......yet.

I french seam, which typically finishes them as I sew.

If I do something else, I usually do it as I go, unless it's a seam I can't. I also tend to place a strip between the seam and outside to keep press marks from showing up.

I finish seams as I go because if you cross a seam, then you cannot finish it completely. I have sewed without a serger for years and I use a variety of techniques to finish. Does your machine have an overlock stitch? That will look like RTW.

As you go, definitely. Ann at Gorgeous Fabrics wrote a good guide on the subject: And now, a word from the Pressinatrix.

When I am sure about a good fit I leave 5/8" allowance for side seams (I used this method for pants and skirts but not for dresses). First, I am finishing with a serger (it cuts 1/8"). Then I make a seam 1/2 inch from the edge. Press.

Just make sure you don't need to make fitting adjustments. If I need to try something on, I just stitch to the cross-seam, break the stitch, and then pick it up on the other side. Then I go back and finish the first seam, complete the stitching on the cross-seam, and then finish the cross-seam.
