I originally found this page via this site but the original page has disappeared. Thank goodness for the Way Back Machine and its backups!

1942 - Modern Pattern Design

It covers how to rotate darts all over the place on a bodice, as well as turning them into other forms of shaping such as gathers, tucks, cowl necks, etc. It is obviously dated in some of the styles but I thought it was a really helpful page for getting my head around what a dart can be turned into.

I was just reading it again for my own benefit and wanted to share it here too, as the web page does not seem to be easily available via a forum search and I thought that was a shame

I know! I am getting all excited planning how to change a basic pattern into something fancy, while managing to ignore the fact that I own many unused fancy patterns that really should be my first port of call

Oh my, my my! This site disappeared off the radar for quite a while (if you do a search on the boards, you'll see us crying over its loss). Now it's great to see we can at least see it again. Thanks so much for finding it! I love it, and used it often.

Very useful link; thanks for turning it up. It seems the loss of it got folks pretty unhappy. You may know this kind of info is available in classic pattern making books. I have several from when I trained at Boston's School of Fashion Design in the mid 1970s.

Here are books I have from back then with methods like the link-

* Pattern Making by the Flat Pattern Method- by Norma R. Hollen. Published in 1961. Excellent and the starter book from my 1st year studies. The illustrations are large and clearly show the manipulations to slash, spread and rotate darts. Included are 1/2 and 1/4 scale slopers and french curves to practice. And that's what you need to do.

* designing apparel through the flat pattern- Published in 1960 by Fairchild of Women's Wear Daily fame. Authors- Ernestine Kopp, Vittorina Rolfo and Beatrice Zelen. Also starts with basics but includes more advanced.

* Pattern Drafting and Grading- by M. Rohr. Published in 1968. This one is quite like to link with lots of looks from the 40s and 50s. The illustrations are smaller and there's lots crammed on a page.

They all overlap somewhat. I recently bought 2 new books that I'm just starting to delve into. They say more about body types, posture and working the pattern around that.

* Fitting and Pattern Alteration- a Multi-Method approach to the Art of Style Selection, Fitting and Alteration- by Elizabet Liechty, Judith Rasband and Della Pottberg-Steineckert. Compares, gives pros and cons for pattern making with 3 methods- Seam, Pivot and Slash. I'd never seen this before and wow!

* Patternmaking for fashion design- by Helen Joseph-Armstrong. Much more modern in look with lots of pattern making for details of garments- hood, plackets, twist fronts, etc.

I have others too . . .

Wendy, I did a semester at FIT in the early '80s and some of the books you mention were either assigned for my course or available in the bookstore.

Lareine, that is just a beautiful resource you've found for us all.
