I bought my first sewing machine on 1/24, THAT day I was sewing scraps of fabric together that I'd gotten as remnants...practicing stitches, length, width, tension, etc.

When I bought my serger, I rushed home (RUSHED!) at lunch - I'd had it delivered to work so I could get my little paws on it immediately - and unpacked it. I proudly sat it on the dining room (my sewing) table.

And there it sat. I finally covered it because I realized it was getting dust on it. And it sat. After about a month, I bought serger thread. Finally, two weeks later, I tackled it and WON! :)

It took me almost a half hour to thread it the first time. Then I noticed weird stitches...the thread on the UL had broken. When I went to inspect it, I had committed a rookie mistake; I had opened the cone of Maxi Lock with scissors. Thread. Ruined.

Since then, I've serged EVERYTHING! lol! Wovens, knits, I've changed the thread (which only takes me about 2.5 minutes now) repeatedly, I've played around a bit with settings.

This weekend, I plan to try my hand at rolled hems.

Good for you! I love my Brother 1034d. Craftsy.com has a beginning serger class. It is pretty good.

Keep enjoying your serger!

Isn't it thrilling?? To think I spend all those years without one--even encouraged others not to buy one--and now I'm always thinking of things I can serge instead of sew....

So glad you got it up and running. It is a great little machine! You will serge everything-everything and no project will be safe
Happy serging!

Check your public library for serger books - some have tips, some have projects. And usually the projects take very little fabric! I made a case for my business cards (actually I made 2 of them, lol) out of scraps.

Love my little 1034D. (Mine is new this year, too.)

Ha, exactly what happened to me! When I finally got brave enough to try it, my cats had chewed through the threads, so I had to thread it from the get-go. It's a good little machine

MrsCharisma , you sound like I feel, such an excitement, it's great isn't it??
Hooray for the 1034D !!!

I haven't tried the rolled hems yet, still working on getting the woolly nylon, but the Blind Hems are fine once *I* got the knack of folding the fabric... me doing this could make a good cartoon series LOL

oh marec - open it up, go on!! Don't let the day go without having some fun with it :)

Please report back on the class, I am very tempted but we have too much else going on at the moment to take on something that needs focus. Perhaps in a few weeks I'll be able to commit and I'd be glad of any feedback, thanks.

:)
