I am making the Colette Peony. I made fitting alterations and need to redraft the facings for the front and back neckline.

First, I consulted the original pattern pieces and found that the facings are wider than the shoulder seam. Is that correct? I'm not sure how that would work.

I altered the facings and made them the same width as the shoulder (2 in. including seam allowances).

This dress has sleeves and if the facing is the same width as the shoulder seam, how will it affect the sleeve? When I sew the sleeve in, it will catch some, but not all, of the facing.

Are facings usually sewn into the sleeve seam allowance?

The dress is a boat neck and has a narrow shoulder, so if not, would I narrow the the facing so that it doesn't meet the armhole seam? To avoid the armhole seam allowance, it would need to be 1 1/4 inches wide instead of 2. Is this right?

I tried to reference other patterns but most had wider shoulders so this wasn't an issue.

To the best of my knowledge, no. I think it's OK to have the facing a bit (say .5") wider than the shoulder seam, just don't sew it into the shoulder and only tack it down after the sleeves are set. If it's a lot wider, then I'd modify it to make it narrower there since you don't want facing extending past the sleeves.
