I need some needles before I can use my grandmother's sewing machine, & new bobbins would be a good idea too. Does anybody know where I can find them (besides ebay)?

Sew Classic online has them. You may want to check with sewing machine repair shop I get some of my bobbins from there too.
Sew Classic ships very fast too. You can use regular size 15 needles on 301 I believe. Needs slant needle feet though.

I use the Singer needles in my machine; the ones that come in the yellow package. As to bobbins, you can find them anywhere--even at Joann's, if you want to spend the money. I once had a bunch of them, and sold about half of them because they weren't used. You can load a lot of thread on those bobbins! And the beauty of the 301/a is that you can wind the bobbin while you are sewing; something I can't do on any of my other machines.

301s use regular needles that almost all home machines use. I prefer Schmetz because they are of uniformly high quality and come in a wide variety of point styles appropriate to any thread/fabric combination.

Not sure which bobbins a 301 takes - aren't they the same as the 221 bobbins? (Anyone?) These might not be available in stores, but you can find them online. Just look for "Featherweight" bobbins .... same thing.

Anyway, as mentioned, standard needles available anywhere will work but this is a slant shank machine so needs the slant shank presser feet which can also be found online if you can't find a wide selection at a sewing store.

They are the same as Featherweight bobbins. They look a bit flatter than class 15 regular bobbins. $6 or less for 10 on Amazon.

BTW, I also want to vouch for Sew Classic. I order everything for my vintage machines there and always get quick delivery - plus Jenny gives the personal touch and will answer your questions via email. She really knows and loves vintage machines (especially the Singers) and she will make sure you are getting exactly what you need.

If you are placing an order with her, be sure and ask for the little seam allowance sticker for your throat plate which costs just a few cents and is great to have if you don't have a graduated throat plate. :)

Thank you so much everyone! I had no idea I could use regular needles, that is great. I will take a look at Sew Classic & Amazon for bobbins, as I couldn't find them at Hancock's. I believe they are Class 22 or something like that. The bobbins I currently have are the ones my grandmother used and they have been well used. I can't wait to start using this sm regularly!

Make that class 221. And be sure to buy from a reputable dealer - some of the carded ones from chain fabric stores don't fit as well as the better ones that mail order dealers like Sew Classic or Cindy Peters sell. If you get cursed with any poor ones, be sure to return them and complain.

I cant use regular needles in mine. Its at a slant. You will know soon enough if they break. Any problems, just switch to the Singer ones.
