I enrolled on the Sew Better, Sew Faster sewing course on Craftsy, this includes the pattern Jacket Express from Islander Sewing Systems.

To buy, this would cost $22.95, the special treasury exchange rate makes this out to be 15.26. The UK import level is 15. Consequently, I have been charged 11.05; 8 of which is handling fee.

I am speachless, I want to do the course, so I presume will have to pay for the pattern.

That is dreadful ! I would be speechless as well! I hope the Australian government doesn't decide to do this also. At the moment anything under $1000 comes from overseas tax free

Good Grief! I hadn't realised that the threshold was so low. I hope that the Craftsy class really makes up for the nasty shock and your jacket is a beauty.

How dreadful.
I am clueless on this import/export stuff. Is it your government or Craftsy that charges you? Is there anyway you can write to someone and tell them it was free? If the value you got was a gift should you be charged anything?
I import my green teas from Japan. They come in a box and value is identified. I have never received anything to collect extra import fees by USA or export fees from Japan.

Another thought. I hope you contacted Craftsy. Please post what they reply. I bet they would just enroll you in the class and ship future free patterns to a US address of a friend. Then the friend could mail them as a gift to you. Are you charged on gifts like that? Or are you being charged extra fees on the credit card class instuction?

I also joined that course and luckily my pattern was delivered, with no trouble, a couple of days ago.

I also received the free pattern from the Plus sized sewing course without any problems.

It must depend of the person handling the post and what mood they are in

Craftsy or any other business cannot control the UK and other country's customs fees and has absolutely nothing to do with our postal system. It's their post office via the country's laws that requires you to pay the duties before they will give you your package. Many countries even open up the package and inspect the contents. Since the pattern was given with the class, it could have been marked as a gift. However, that may not always dismiss all the import fees.

I think it is hit or miss. At my work, most Canadian customers do not have issues with shipments. But a few have contacted us to let us know they got slammed. I imagine it's a downer. I love looking forward to a package but it would be awful to have to pay to receive it after I already purchased it. From what we can tell at work, UK does have high custom fees. We rarely get purchases made over $20/USD.

I think the worst thing is, the exchange rate used is different from the one usually available, thus making the converted amount higher.

I must look into why the post office charges 8 handling fee, it doesn't seem to involve them doing more than they do for an oversize package. They don't charge for that.

I've been lucky so far and not been caught for the customs charge with the patterns that come with the craftsy courses however as the pattern is free should it not state that on the custom label rather than the price you would have paid if it was bought from Islander patterns. I don't mind so much paying the custom charge however I really object to paying the post office 8 for the pleasure of going to pick the packages up from the post office and paying them the money
