DD's friend's Mom was once extremely rude to me, blaming my daughter for something that was totally NOT her fault. Long story short, her husband had to call me back and apologize for her behavior. She never offered any apology, even though her daughter told her my DD had nothing to do with it. We have not spoken since.

So years later, Mom sends her daughter to my house, with fabric, asking if I could applique an owl and embroider a name on it for her. Many of you saw my results.
I placed the owl wrong, and offered to purchase more fabric, or add borders to bring it back to size, but they said no, just cut it off. The satin stitching is very tight and the other owl can be cut out and used as a patch.

I was not going to charge her anything after all this.
Her friend texted DD wanting to know how much I wanted to be paid, so DD told her $30. They got very upset about that price, asking if I was charging double since I had to do it twice. They said, *we provided the fabric, and then she messed it up and we have a shorter blanket now*.
So, DD tells them no, $30 is what I FIGURED she'd want to get paid, but my Mom said she wasn't going to charge anything due to the screw ups. They said they were figuring about $15, tops.

The Mom never bothered calling me during any of this process. DD kept asking for the Mom's phone number so I could speak to her, but they never provided it! I never could get info on a deadline, so I gave up an entire weekend of sewing to deal with this crap quickly.
DD wanted me to do this because she is proud of my work, and thought she was doing good bringing me some *business*. She begged me to do it, so I did. Then she saw all the prep work of washing, drying, pressing, finding the right font, choose the right colors and stabilizer, prepare in the software, and do two hoopings of embroidery - one for name, one for owl, not to mention the meticulous cutting time involved with applique.

At least DD understands now.
Thanks for letting me rant about this.

Gosh what a mess! I am so sorry Southern your owl was adorable and you were extremely generous with you time and talent. Some people are never happy, and that mother, needs to work on her filter, seriously what a witch! You have a wonderful daughter, she is so proud of you. Some people......

Yeah, some people have no filter... Worse yet, some people are totally lacking in consideration and there is no excuse beyond self-absorption. Given the circumstances, you behaved admirably. That woman behaved insufferably.

You did a generous thing, most likely to please your daughter and obviously not because it was something you were longing to do, and somebody saw fit to be rude and ungrateful. I'm sorry that happened. Please don't let it put you off doing nice things for other people - but please don't ever do anything for that woman again if she doesn't change her ways!

I'm always amazed at how oblivious people are. $15? Wow! That is simply insulting! I had a lady say to me once, "doesn't the machine do all the work?" And I just laughed at her. She baked and decorated cakes so I replied that was like saying the oven did all the work for her. She still didn't get it and I wasn't willing to waste any more of my time on enlightening her. I'm also baffled how some people think that if they cover material costs then that should be sufficient. Hmmm....no. I don't work for free. These are just a few reasons why I only make items as gifts.

OMG. I would be FURIOUS!!!

I don't get it. People have no idea what they are asking I guess. But $30 would have been a bargain for the time involved. How could they think $15? Do they think it takes a few minutes of time?

I'm so mad for you!!! Seriously.

The woman evidently has a problem, and it sounds like her husband knows about it.

I don't sew for anyone except immediate family. They understand it is labor. I always remember that "No." is a complete sentence.

Yeah...I love the expression..."What is it about "no" you don't understand?" At least your daughter will understand "no" as she might be tempted to do this again....offering your services might seem like a helpful thing to her, plus she is proud of your abilities and wants to show them off. If she does fall in that trap again she will need to do it herself. I do not mean this as a dis in any way but it would be establishing proper boundaries. You might want to thank her for wanting to share your skill...but not to do it again as you simply do not have the time to do it....but you'd be willing to teach her! That would be a gift she could use her whole life.
