I absolutely adore this dress from Modcloth. It was worn by Zooey Deschanel on an Episode of "New Girl" and was brilliantly knocked off in the RTW Contest by Ambersim I am wanting to knock this off and I already have my fabric. The only thing holding me up is that I am about to turn 43 in August. Do you think it is too young for me? I just love it and it is my style, but I want to be sure I won't look like a little girl. I think it looks AWESOME on Ambersim and Zooey, but they are a little younger than me.

Please don't hit me... you asked... But IMHO the doll fabric MAY even be a bit too young for Zooey. And by that I mean even if she were as young as she looks. (She's 33 and looks 23.)

Although certainly she looks fabulous in this dress.

This is a classic silhouette, though -- quite vintage. There are some beautiful classic dresses that have a pleated skirt and a v-neck. Could you use the same basic idea and just substitute something a bit more timeless for the doll part?

I think it also depends on where you intend to wear the dress.

If I were turning 43, I would make it and not look back. I think it's adorable. The only thing I would change is the length, I would make it a touch longer just to suit my proportions. The silhouette is very nice and once the pattern is perfected for fit, I could see this as a great little black dress.

Do you already have the doll fabric? If you think it's too young for you, then you might not wear it or feel comfortable in the dress. I'd change out the doll fabric to something like Chinese lanterns or something a little more 'adult' themed. The style of the dress is fabulous! And if your attitude is screw what others think, by all means, go for the dolls!

I would use a different print and leave off the bow.
Otherwise I think it's quite pretty for a mature woman.

Ambersim has done a great job of making over a 'tv' dress into a wearable dress. Dropping the waist and adding length takes the dress beyond the short high waisted baby doll look that I have recently been seeing.

The skirt fabric......blessed, if I understand correctly, you sometimes create just for the pleasure and challenge of creating and then you showcase your creation with great accessories (The shoes!) and very few wearings.

I agree with Vintage Joan about using a different fabric if you want something timeless. However, having the advantage of being a 'fan' - I remember writing that I'd love to go to your church on Sunday just to see your latest creation - I'd judge that you are going for 'now' rather than timeless.

I'm sure that you have Ambersim's ladylike proportions in mind. And it will be an interesting and different way to pop some color into a late summer dress.

Your many previous creations and the way you style them tell me that you will be translating the New Girl look into an upbeat New Woman look.

Go for it! You and the congregation will be disappointed if you start limiting yourself to a number that is impossible to define. What is 43? 22 years since you became a legal adult? 50 or 60 years until you pass on? Two years younger than someone else. Six years older?
.......

Me rambling...........

Enjoy what you are doing and continue to do it well. I've written before that you'll inspire at least one young person to sew and that you surely bring a twinkle to the eye of at least one senior lady.

Heaven knows that life can still be constraining in some communities and within some periods of our lives. If making this dress gives you invisible wings within your constraints; or, if it just puts a smile on your face and lifts your heart, go for it.

I love that. Yes, if it can do all that for you, totally go for it.

You are so very kind. I am going for a "now" look and not something timeless. I am going to go for it. I already have to fabric why waste it? Thanks everyone who responded so much.

I agree that while this look is a bit "girly" there are times that girly is appropriate. Or at least perfectly acceptable, lol.

If your style tends to be on the young side (people are used to seeing you in it) - especially flirty skirts, ruffles, or off-beat prints, then this won't be much of a shock. The same goes if you like to surprise people with what you wear for "dress up" occasions.

As a nearly-50 who enjoys ruffles or a fun print (and fights hard against looking dowdy), I say go for it!
