I am using the pattern Butterick 5764. I sewed up the dress once by choosing the size 22W and doing a FBA. The FBA I just gathered on the side seam. Once done, and tried it on, the whole front was gaping and the armholes were tight. I took it all apart thinking I needed to go down a size so the shoulders were narrower. Once I had the new pattern done, it was not much change in the size, but this time, I made a dart for the FBA instead of the gathering on the side seam. I decided now to just turn in the armholes 5/8" and pin to see if it was better by changing the size. It wasn't, because the shoulder width did not change much. I have been searching all over the web and can't seem to find anywhere that can explain how to make the armholes bigger, or to adjust the pattern. Please help! If anyone can help, I know it can be the wealth of experience in this group.

I have added pictures to flicker account. You can see how the first version turned out. You really can't see but the overlap of bodice is pinned so it wouldn't gape.

And.....It's Sew Easy, 'Patterns' (2011) has some excellent complimentary information if you can find this episode online. This show illustrated some basics on sleeves in relation to the armhole that they fit into and how to make complimentary adjustments.

Although it isn't a close match to your question you will find the instructor's explanation helpful.

I saved the show to be able to watch it again and study more closely - I don't often do that.

Maybe I'm making this too simple, but since armholes are essentially enclosed circles, if you sewed them with a larger seam allowance, you'd make the opening larger.

Karla- that is exactly what I did. I'd like to make this dress again ( I will post review)but there is some more tweaking to do. I am not willing to take that on just yet.
