Question about a Bernina I'm considering

HI all... tomorrow I am going to look at a Bernina 200 that has been upgraded to a 730. The seller is asking 1000 dollars... I've seen them usually go for 2500 to 3000 so I think this is a good price, but I know it's an older machine. Still, it meets my requirements... I wanted a Bernina or Viking with color touch screen, embroidery, and thread cutter and knee lifter... this one has all of those things. If I get it, I will probably sell my Brother PC 420 and then I will still have the Bernina and the vintage Brother all metal straight stitcher for a back up...

Do you think the machine is worth 1000 dollars and is there anything I should look at specifically when checking out the machine? I've never used a Bernina or an embroidery machine before, so this will be my first experience with both... I plan to mainly use it for piecing, but will also enjoy having the embroidery functionality. Is this something that has USB and should it make a difference as to whether or not the software in included? I asked the seller if she had the software and she said she did not know because she bought it as a package deal and hasn't had time to play with or explore it...

Thanks... I'm getting excited!

I would find out when the last service was done on the machine. If not recently, I would ask the seller take it to the Bernina dealer of your choice to get serviced. That way, you'll know everything is working. Without a warranty, repair costs can get expensive.

I do not think the 200 upgraded to the 730 will have a usb function. I think it had a cd drive that can read Bernina embroidery cds only. It should have the update to use the BSR, if I remember correctly.

Take fabric samples and test it thoroughly. Best wishes!

That sounds like CraigsList-Talk for, it doesn't work and I hope to get $1,000 for it by selling it to someone who knows nothing about what they are looking at.

Just wanted up update... I got the machine! My first Bernina and I'm so excited. I think it was a steal... I didn't even try to talk the lady down because I felt that was a fair price considering how complete this package was and what good shape overall the machine was in... these usually go for 2500 or 3000 dollars around here. It does have USB and even came with a USB stick and a CD reader and lots of software and all the hoops and books... this lady was the original owner... she said her husband bought it for her back in 2002 (the year I graduated high school) and has since passed away and she hasn't had time to do much with it... the needle threader is broken, but that is the only problem, and the machine works perfectly otherwise.

Thanks for the advice!

You got a good price. I had this machine, but got the BSR also. It sewed very nicely. I sold mine to upgrade to my 830, but it was a TOL machine for a long time.

I am a Quilter at heart. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. Recently I have discovered I enjoy doing applique. I love making pictures. Using a sewing machine is much easier than counted cross stitch or oil painting for me. I enjoy landscape quilting as well. I am working on my first applique project in the spring of 2014.
