Hi, I was wondering if any Bernina ladies could help me out. I am trying to choose between 3 sewing machines and am not sure what to buy.

I am a garment sewer mainly, although I am about to start my first quilt so who knows, I might get the quilting bug.

I have the opportunity to buy a new

Bernina 530 at $2,200
Bernina 440 at $2,500 ( last new one in Australia as far as I can tell)
Bernina 550 at 2,600 ( it was used as a demo at a quilt show)

I started looking a couple of months ago and fell in love with the 440 when it was shown to me. I went back to the shop a couple of days ago thinking I would look at the 530 since maybe I didn't need the BSR but they didn't have one. So she showed me the 580 and said they could sell me a discounted one that was used as a demo model at a quilt show.

At that price the 550 is a good buy, but I am a little unsure about the touch pad (?) that has ok and the arrows. It looks a bit flimsy, like it won't wear very well. Also the lady demonstrating seemed to press it hard like she was having trouble selecting things. Admittedly I didn't try it so I don't know for sure.

Anyway, the 550 and 440 won't last very long at those prices so I have to make a quick decision. At the moment I am leaning towards the 550 if it is still available.

I have the 550 and absolutely love it. The screen and arrows are great.

That is good to know as that was one of my concerns. How long have you had it for?

The lighting is awesome on the 530, and I think is improved from the 430 series.

Can you locate a 630 or 635? That is the one you want. I have one and it is wonderful. Love the knobs.

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

Learn is right. I have a 440 (LOVE!) I always thought the 630 only offered better embroidery features, but I got a 630 and a great price, and the screen, straight stitch plate security feature, smooth action knobs are worth the extra expense IMO. I bought both used.

The 440 (and 430, 450, 630/635, 640) are all capable of embroidery. The 530 and 550 are not at all. Even if you aren't currently interested in embroidery, it's a nice option to have, and might increase resale value.

But..... the 5 series has better lighting.

Of the choices you presented, *I* would get the 440 (2nd choice 550), but you might have different priorities, like lighting.

I really like my 550. I mostly sew garments, but I wanted the BSR for the few times I make quilts. It is included with the 550.

I would choose the 440 over the 5 series. It's a proven workhorse, and a joy to sew on. I have the 630 as well, and I love both of them. Neither the 5 series or the 7 series impressed me. They have different features, but less of them for more money than their predecessors. Saying that, I wouldn't own the 440 for embroidery. EC on PC (require a computer connection to embroider) is a royal pain, and I wouldn't count on software support continuing for very long. If you can opt for it without the embroidery module, you'll have one sweet machine!

Thanks for all your replies. There is lots to think about.

The 550 does have better lighting over the 440 and a stronger table.

As for a 630 or 635, they are out of my price range unless I can find something second hand. But I am on a bit of a time frame. I just started some work doing repairs and am borrowing a machine off a friend ( i took over from her ) until I can get a suitable machine.

As I said, I fell in love with the 440 when I saw it, but my head is saying get the 550 because it is the newer version.

I'd choose the 440. They're a little more solidly made than the 5 Series. The embroidery capabilities on the 440 are way outdated, but you can put a Bernina Stitch Regulator on it for quilting.
