What does the sewing term "perfectly keyed facings " mean? I came across this phrase in an old booklet titled "Sew Your own with Fashion Appeal" by Shirlery Cherry. Also the term "Key it" was used in referring to seams. Any info would be helpful.

Keying means to mark so as to match. In tailoring, I will key pieces using tailor's tacks by stacking the pieces and tacking through all at the same time. Then the threads are snipped and the pieces separated.

Thank you, Lynn. I thought it was a term referring to alignment, but wasn't sure. I tried looking for the term by googling , but to no avail. Next time I will start right here for any questions regarding sewing. There is such a wealth of information to be shared, it is amazing.

It's also used to match seamlines at the waist or along other vertical and horizontal seam crossings. You will sometimes see the term, "key the seam at the waistline zipper." Mark the pieces exactly so they match and use that mark to stitch the zipper where it meets those seams. Hope this makes sense.

Yes, indeed it does make sense. I was surprised to find this term unfamiliar to me. This is a sewing term I will share during a sewing lesson with my granddaughter. That way she won't be stumped if she comes across it years down the road when her "Grams" isn't here.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge
