As someone living in Australia I'm always looking to the northern hemisphere to see what's in store for our fashions in the next 6-12 months (we usually follow 6 months behind, our summer being your winter...funnily enough the advent of the internet and faster/cheaper airline travel has not changed this!). Just curious as to what's "big" right now in your american/european summer, so I can "shop my stash" or at least keep an eye out while in fabric stores for suitable stuff for next summer.
Soo colours/prints/styles anyone?
I've seen a LOT of arrows these past few months so is tribal a theme?

Hmm. I have been seeing lots of bright colors, certainly a fair amount of prints - on pants (trousers) now too, which is new this year. I personally haven't seen a lot of tribal prints; more florals including photorealistic ones and big blown up blooms, kinda retro.

I'm seeing a frightening resurgence of everything I wore in junior high back in the late '80s--really bright, almost fluorescent colors; shapeless short tops with garish tropical prints (I even spotted OP T-shirts at a store last month!!); leggings/skinny pants in bright colors... Honestly, I'm waiting for puff paint and high tops.

That said, I'm still seeing a lot of lace, especially for skirts; and dresses continue to be big. Not quite as many maxis, maybe, but definitely agree on the ikat/tribal prints... as well as the sort of sweet/retro/"kitten" look styles we've discussed before (things you could picture on Zooey Deschanel).

Maxis are EVERYWHERE! The new trend with them seems to be with a princess seam high slit. And high-low hem maxis (mullet dresses) are really popular. Peplums are still having a moment. Crop tops with midi skirts are very popular. And also midi skirts and dresses in general are great if you don't want a floor length maxi. Tailored shorts, both the short-shorts and bermudas done in really nice fabrics like brocade and lace are hot at the moment. I'm seeing nice tailored slim-fitting pants (not necessarily skinny pants) worn with ankle-strap pumps and sandals. Tribal prints, mirror prints are everywhere too. Look at designers like Peter Pilotti and Stella Jean Ankara prints. And also graphic black and white stripes.

Really? Right now I am making a dress 7/8 length maxi with a princess cut slit... I designed it without knowing that it is a trend - just because I had enough fabric for maxi and made a slit on front so I can walk!

Floral prints, LOTS of green in all different hues, more of the bohemian/feminine flowy loose shapes, lace trims, and crochet. Maxie skirts and dresses with either flat or chunky shoes/sandals. Pants have skinny legs and capris are everywhere. Jewelry is larger and chunky, but it may be on the way out for next year so don't invest in lots of pieces. Fabrics are still sheer so camisoles or tanks are still needed for layering. Seeing lots of turquoise colors being used along with neutrals.

What I call "mermaid" dresses and skirts. An asymmetrical , curved hemline with the front considerably shorter than the back so it looks as if the person has a tail, hence mermaid. I am sure there is an official name for this style. The young girls (middle school through college) all wear it, especially from see-through fabric and a sewn-in slip underneath.

IMO, a difficult, and not very flattering, style to wear for those with less than gorgeous legs because the front tends to hit where the thigh is largest. Sorry. . .

What's funny is that I always found AU to be slightly ahead of the US on trends, especially in the fashion sportswear.

A friend sent me a dress at the end of my summer last year that I am just now seeing similar lines of it in the US in stores.

Following this thread with interest. I live in Victoria, Australia and I have to say, after reading the replies that I saw most of those things here last summer. I don't know that we really are behind in fashion. I feel it's the opposite. Of course, I could be wrong.

I am also following with interest - and breathing a sigh of relief that I have so many beautiful vintage Lutterloh patterns to choose from if (or, more likely, when) current fashions prove unpalatable
