So I'm making Butterick 5893 and it names some fabric that I have never heard of. But anyway what I am wondering is can I replace those obscure (to me) fabris with jersey knit fabric? I love to jersey fabric pants.

This pattern was designed for wovens. The fabrics it calls for are very soft and have drape. You might be able to sub a knit. I'm sure there are others out here with a bit more experience than I have, with interchanging fabric types with certain patterns. Hopefully some of them will chime in

If you have a knit at home that is not your favorite and when you look at it you have that "what was I thinking" feeling, use that as a muslin and see how the pattern works for you.

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but I think the knit would sew larger than the woven material. Best to make a muslin with a knit you're not so keen on. I have to say thanks for bringing this pattern to my attention! I have a wedding to go to in Aug. It's outside in the late afternoon on Cape Cod and I was wondering what to wear. I am not a dress kinda gal but this would be cute in a light floral fabric! Keep us posted on your progress--after your machine arrives!

The fabrics the pattern calls for are very common-linen, rayon challis, and other lightweight drapey wovens. This would make up very nicely in a rayon challis and rayon is a nice fabric in summer as it is made from plant fibers. A jersey knit would be too heavy and bulky for this pattern IMO. Also, the ease for a pattern made for wovens is much different than the ease needed for a knit. There are some knit pants patterns out there. If you have your heart set on using a jersey knit, I think you would have more success starting with a pattern designed for knits.

I've sewn with cotton jersey knits that are very firm with almost no stretch, that type can interchange with a woven. A cotton jersey knit tends to curl, I press it with spray starch to flatten it out.

If you made those with a knit you would likely have to staple the hems of your pants up several inches to keep them from dragging on the floor and tripping you. There is a lot of fabric in those and the weight of the fabric would cause it to stretch in a knit.

FluentFox, have you started the pants yet? How are they turning out? I bought the pattern and fabric and hope to start cutting a muslin later today. I'd love to know about fit issues, etc.
Thanks!
