If you're nervous, make a muslin. It's a practice dress made from cheap fabric that gives you an idea of how it will fit. You can practice putting in the zipper, making the pockets, etc. without risking your nice fabric. It also allows you to perfect the fit. You basically seam it together, but don't necessarily finish the hems, etc., unless you want to practice that.
Some people, when they get better, make wearable muslins. The fabric for these might be from the stash, or cost a little, but they end up with a wearable piece that allowed them practice of whatever technique was worrying them.
