When we were planning our vacation for June 2013, I did an internet search looking for something to do along the routes DH was going to be cycling. Most of the cycling was being done in Wisconsin so I simply typed "Wisconsin Quilt Stores" into google and this is what I found

Wisconsin Quilt Shop Hop

Talk about a kid in a candy shop. I have never participated in anything like this before but having just gotten back into quilting, I was very intrigued ... probably too intrigued

My Vacation Haul -- this does include the garment fabric I bought at Ginny's Fine Fabrics in Rochester but the majority of the fabric I purchased was quilting fabric.

I visited a total of 11 quilt shops that were on the "Hop List" and also checked out the Wisconsin Quilt Museum, Ye Olde Schoolhouse Quilt Shop and the Woolen Mill in Cedarburg, WI -- a community that is a true treasure for quilters.

I have a number of quilt projects on the go right now that I am collecting fabrics for so this type of shop hopping provided an opportunity to pick up a lot of fabrics that fit into the existing quilt plans. I didn't buy any backing or batting while I was away but I managed to get most of the fabrics for 2 grandkid quilts

DGD's Butterfly Quilt
Oldest DGS's "Something Brown" Quilt

and added to the fat quarters for DH's "Planes, Trains & Bicycles ... and a Little Star Trek" quilt

Planes, Trains, etc.

as well as our "Vacation Memories" quilt.

Vacation Memories

I will say that I was a little confused about how some of the sections were set up for the Shop Hop but I'm sure there was a logistical reason for the way it was set up -- it made planning along our vacation route a little interesting but definitely do-able.

I thought I would share some of my "finds" and experiences -- several of these shops will get a return visit when I am next in the neighbourhood.

Enough for now -- next up an introduction to some of the quilt shops I checked out.

Wow what a great haul!!! And brilliant to plan things for you to do on the route!!

I heard someone say there is an app for smart phones for Quilt shops, you put in the town and it gives you all of them *dangerous* hobby eh?!!!

Love all the various fabrics, I'd be sewing on those for years. What a great idea, thanks a ton

The first quilt shop I visited was in Sturgeon Bay up in the Door County Peninsula -- I was there June 5th, 2 days before the shop hop actually started but it was the only time I was going to be in the area.

Barn Door Quilts is located in downtown Sturgeon Bay and is packed full of great fabrics and a welcoming atmosphere. They had the fabric created for the Shop Hop on display but were not able to start selling it until the first day of the event. The shop had several quilters chatting about patterns, fabrics and upcoming quilting events.

I was intrigued by a Quilt Pattern series Lighthouses of Door County and picked up this one block pattern -- we had been hiking the day before on Rock Island and had visited this particular lighthouse (Pottawatomie) -- I plan to do up the single block as a wall hanging.

We had also been to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park earlier in the week (the block in the lower left corner) but they didn't have that block in stock. These patterns are from 2007 so I'm not sure if I'll be able to find some of the others but I do have an e-mail address so I'm going to try contacting them.

I picked up a couple of fat quarters and an interesting sewing machine fabric

Treadle Sewing Machine Fabric -- pictured here with what I call my "Just for Fun" fabrics (no particular projects in mind for these fabrics but they were too good to pass up).

Barn Door Quilts is the only quilt store left in the Door County Peninsula (several people stressed this point and took care to mention that they are very happy to still have it).

Yet another reason for me not to own a Smart Phone

I've managed to get all the fabrics washed and folded and put away in their various project boxes. Will pull them out after the Fabric Stash and UFO contests are over. My plan is to work on the 2 for the grandkids during the Sewing for Kids Contest -- I'll be managing the contest so will just be sewing along.

How is the mobile quilt studio working out? I've been following your travel adventures as well.

Are you in Minnesota now?

We actually love Wisconsin -- we spent a portion of our 2012 vacation in Wisconsin as well (in the fall).

The State Parks in Wisconsin are fabulous -- our faves so far Devil's Lake, Willow River and Governor Dodge. There are many more on our list to visit. DH also loves the cycling -- faves to date are Badger, Sugar River and Military Ridge trails.

Will try to post more shop reviews later today.

I haven't seen any recently but a group of shops will have one and you have to visit each online shop and tell them when the bunny is. It's usually a bunny icon. I think there are prizes etc. I've never really done it but have seen them. And I usually run into a bunny here and there next time I hear of one I will post about it. I like lot of shops on facebook so usually get news that way.

omg I did a Shop hop online and it was a ton of fun. Found shops in places I never thought to look and it took at least 2 days of web surfing I was very careful and only bought from a few shops (ok maybe 5!), but you will get on a TON of mailing lists!!

Bookmarked my favorite 5 - one with an entire Cat series of CucumberCat etc... too cute

They are going on really often - Here's the link to go have fun!

Fab Shop Hop

We are set down in northern Ohio now until mid-August when we'll move over to Minnesota :-) Love my little sewing set-up inside this year. Previously I put a board on the picnic table, then a flannel backed cheap table cloth and did my cutting and sewing outside.

Still raining every afternoon/evening so I'm glad to have an indoor setup this year!

I'm drooling over some of the sewing fabric!! What fun finds. Amazing they are hard to find!!!! I think I've got blue with white scissors, some misc notions on fabric, and 1 other sewing related.

Best find was at Missouri Quilt Shop, they have a line called McCalls - it's very old time looking patterns from back when, they little girls in their outfits etc.. Used it in a quilt of course.

Love seeing all your fabrics!! Helps me not buy so much? hmm nope that isn't true, makes me want to go shopping and get more hehehe hopelessly addicted!! Ok I need a 12 step program!!!

My folks have a cottage in Lake Geneva, WI where I grew up every summer - I love Wisc too.
