I know you can get sample books of colors/designs of upholstery, leather, whatnot, but does anyone sell sample books to show the different types of fabric? Like a taffeta swatch, an organza swatch, a linen swatch, etc? I have several bins of material that I've collected from family, yard sales, thrift stores, $1 yd clearance at walmart, and things that struck my fancy at JoAnn's or Hancock's. However, I do not necessarily know "what" the various things are. I can look at a pattern and see it suggests some fabrics, and I think, I probably have that, if only I knew what to look for.

I have been starting to snip off a bit of fabric when I bring it home and staple it to a note card with type of fabric and amount, but it doesn't help much for what I already have or for those that say "unknown" or list just a cotton/polyester percentage. I guess eventually I will record enough to have a sample of everything, especially if I keep a close eye on the remnant bins, but it would be cool to have a designated sample set.

The best reference set and I think exactly what you are seeking:

That is exactly what I wanted. Thank you. I figured I could eventually collect my own, but why reinvent the wheel?

Of course, the publisher is currently sold out and amazon and ebay just about want your first born child for a copy. Not the end of the world, the publisher listed August as when they should have more.

I have a swatch book that has undyed fabric samples, primarily natural fabric. There are several samples of blends and man-made fibers, too. The swatches are large, 3 inch square, and already assembled in the book. I've included a link to a review by Tilly of Sewing Bee fame with great pictures of the pages. I highly recommend the book.

Amazon Description:
This easily navigable resource provides 100 swatches of most recognized and widely used varieties of fabric, including cottons, silks, wools, and linens, to encourage consideration of not just the aesthetic appeal of various fabrics but also their structure, feel, and weight. Secured in an attractive ring-bound folder, with descriptions alongside them, the fabrics are in their raw state, before bleaching, dying, or finishing, so that their properties can be observed without the distraction of color or pattern.

A cheaper alternative at only $19.19 is the 104 fabric sampler from Dharma Trading with FREE SHIPING:

Dharma Trading Samples

I am planning to blog about this because I just got them but they are 10cm/4in squares and each is labelled with the fabric name, weight, number and a note about the texture, dying options etc.

Hours of fun!

They come in 3 packs per type : cotton, silk and something else, I forget and are mostly unbleached, with some white/bleached and a small number of black samples.

So basically you can feel the hand, thinnest, texture etc. I love it!

The All About Books give more detail on the page, have smaller samples but are printe/dyed so you have to decided what you would rather have.

ETA There are some new-to-me fabrics like PINEAPPLE CLOTH!!! (I also corrected the price)

I ordered the $19.99 set and the Fabric for Fashion swatch book. I also found the All About Silk book used on Amazon for a decent price. I will check again later I guess for the other "All About" books, depending on how the silk one compares to the other book and the trading company swatches.

Thanks again, everyone.
