I need to make a pattern for a swimsuit bottom for my granddaughter. Someone suggested using a pair of her underpants as a template. Can someone guide me as to how this is done?

Take them apart by removing the seams and existing elastic. Lay the pieces on your desired fabric, trace around and add side seams. Then cut new elastic and stitch everything together.
