So here I am again with a question about a pattern. I am making Butterick 5893 next week sometime. I scoured my local Joann store and found one possible fabric option as I am not very comfortable buying fabric online its Fashion Suiting. (I found it in store then online so I could show you.) Its a soft slightly stretchy fabric. And the store associate suggested to for this particular pattern as they don't have what is on the envelope. Do you think this is a good fabric or should I face my fear of online fabric and get what the packet says? Any suggestions help.....

Personally, the fabric suggestion is (to me) more structured then the envelope calls for.

Linen would be the easiest to work with, then faille. Challis can be a bit tricky, and so can Georgette, but all of them are a lightweight fabric that drapes, which is what you will be looking for in these pants.

A suiting would be too heavy, IMO.

I would sew it up to see how the fabric behaves and also the fit. I'd love to know where you can get the fabric that is shown on the envelope. Wish that info was disclosed or maybe someone here on PR knows?

The suiting that I found is very light weight. It almost feels like jersey fabric but tougher and with a lot less stretch (i am probably doing a crap job of explaining the feeling of the fabric)

Faille from Fabric Mart

I usually get orders here faster then FFC.

Nah, you did fine explaining it. I work with a lot of challis, so my concern would be if it drapes as well as the pattern would need, ya know?

It seemed like it had good drape. I was draped over the bolt fairly well and it seemed to flow. it wasn't stiff like all the other suiting i saw.

I've often wondered what kind of "suit" I'd make from the lightweight "suiting" fabric I've found at Jo-Ann's. It sounds like you and I are referring to same/similar fabrics, and I wouldn't hesitate to make this pants pattern from that fabric.

I have this pattern. My thought on fabric choice is that it should have a little body to it...the pant legs look a little structured, not limp and hanging, twirling around the model's legs. If you want your pants to retain the wide-legged look get something with a little body to it...if you want them to be more flowy and hang close to your legs then get something lighter and softer.

I'd go with a rayon challis. Why? It has some structure but at the same time, it drapes. You don't want something to start puddling down around your ankles, and I think the polyester would do this. Also, rayon is great to wear, especially during the summer, as it's cooler. Polyester doesn't breathe and you'd be very warm (depending on where you live, of course!)
