One of the new things thatís around the corner for us here at Burda is a relaunch of our spectacular BurdaStyle magazine! If you havenít yet picked up a copy, youíll surely be blown away. BurdaStyle magazine has been around since 1949 and is prevalent in almost 100 countries. And weíre about to unveil a redesign of the magazine in the US and Canada this fall.
BurdaStyle magazine is jam-packed with great style. Itís filled with gorgeous Burda designs, free patterns, and sewing tips galore. And with this exciting release, of course, comes a lot of work behind-the-scenes. Weíve been busy bees choosing patterns, designing pages, and pulling together new product that I just know youíll love! And weíre now looking to bring on board a talented Project Editor.
The BurdaStyle Project Editor will work with me and will be heavily involved in the magazine. Youíll rewrite existing sewing instructions in a way thatís clear and easy-to-understand for the North American audience, and youíll eventually help to produce pages and create new content. Itís a very detailed role, and the perfect person has an incredible technical background in sewing and garment construction (a fashion design degree is preferred but not mandatory). The perfect candidate also has fantastic writing and copy editing skills, and is extremely meticulous and punctual.
This is a full-time job and weíre looking for someone who can start immediately. An ideal candidate will be based in Loveland (Colorado), New York, Cincinnati, Sudbury (Massachusetts), or Toronto. However, if youíre the absolute perfect person for this role, there is a possibility you can work from home.

So they're only re-launching it for the US & Canada? That's really weird (if true), as the existing version is the same for all English speaking countries, just with a different cover to reflect local currencies.
God knows the instructions need improving, though, so this surely is a good thing! I just hope we get the benefits here in the UK (and Australia, New Zealand....)

I don't know exactly what they have in mind, but I sure like this part.
Could this mean they actually started listening a few years ago when some of us complained about their translations (see this thread)? They inappropriately used a slang term they didn't understand, and someone from PR called them on it. They replied snarkily that the translators were native English speakers. I got annoyed at the reply, and wrote to them too. They never answered me, but perhaps all this got them thinking.
Anyway, this does sound promising. Perhaps the segue into U.S. sales (of Burda envelope patterns) via Simplicity was part of a larger strategy.

I'd be more inclined to think that they've realized they need to step up their US/Canada game before they lose much more business to other pattern magazines like Ottobre, etc. I wonder how many dropped them after the last round of price increases, and the cutback of the Burda Plus to 2 times a year, and almost all repeats of previous patterns in the regular Burda (?...it's been a while since that happened so I may not be remembering the details quite right on that). I renewed it one time after that, then dropped my subscription. If there's a must-have pattern, I'll buy it on-line. It also appears that the Barnes & Noble near me no longer carries it.

I just went through the other thread about the translations. I kind of understand their being pissed off, there have been a few altercations in my company when people have called the translators ability into question. Especially since many translations are directly related to the quality of the original text, and some mistakes are bound to happen. Its like catching a sewing mistake from a designer dress and then writing the company and asking why they dont use trained seamstresses.
However, as a company, I would NEVER have allowed a letter like that out of my PR department. You would have gotten, Thank you for your attenton to detail, that paticular meaning of the slang use slipped through our editing process. Thank you for letting us know!

I read it too, and Burda always has read as ESL German native, since they sound just like a friend I have had for decades when we talk (now all in English, my German sucks).
I have more trouble from Russia, Spanish/Italian/Portuguese and Dutch speaking countries because of my name. Apparently my name says "I speak your language fluently even though I send emails in English." And I am sure my google translate sends them as wonky messages as I translate.
Relaunch or not, the language in it doesn't actually matter to me, or if they update or not. I know it's a German mag, and like every foreign magazine I don't expect them to be perfect. Most of the time, it's the only one I get that is in English where I can read it effortlessly, albeit sometimes screwy.

I hope that they don't revise themselves too much for the American/Canadian market. Think of how many British TV shows have been revised for Americans - and lost a lot in the process.
However, better written instructions would be a help.

The other question is how much longer is the US/Canada version going to take vs. the European version if they're re-writing all the instructions?
One woman. One sewing machine. One giant stack of fabric. What could possibly go wrong?
