This show at the Art Institute of Chicago is absolutely gorgeous.

There are paintings upon paintings of women in sumptuously beautiful dresses.

There are pages and pages of often hand-tinted fashion illustrations from fashion magazines and ads from the late 19th century.

There are a several stunning dresses from the period on display, some hats, a few pairs of teeny, tiny shoes.

It's like a little girl's dream of what art should be: Pretty ladies and pretty clothes.

The show came here from the Met in NYC, which has more info about it on their website than the AIC does. Here is a taste:

I agree. I was lucky enough to be in NY when it was at the Met and saw it there. Wonderful exhibit!

Those of you in the Chicago area - don't miss it! You'll be glad you went - and inspired.

Thank you for the link.I would love to see this exhibit,I wonder if it will travel to the West Coast. There is such yearning still for fabulous clothes, beautiful settings and grand society.I am reminded of exhibits in which my daughter's paintings were featured. She painted late 19th century people in typical settings, wearing clothes of that period.Dozens of women would stand transfixed by the scenes often expressing a desire to just walk right into the room or the garden,or to wear such finery. They bought the paintings too because they were about people and family life or romantic private moments all clad in satin and velvet. My daughter was just in her 20's but sold many paintings and did a lot of commissions, her work is really all over the world. It was amazing to see how this drew such attention and the sentiments her work evoked. I am still trying to figure it out against our modern, no-frills sense of style.

Carry,

I scoured the Met and the AIC web pages about the exhibit to see if it was traveling anywhere else and could not find any information about where, if anywhere, it is going next. A review of the show in the New York Review of Books mentions that it was as the Musee D'orsay in Paris last year and lists the Met and AIC exhibition dates but no others, so I think it is not traveling any further than Chicago.
