Sometimes the items at the thrift store are store clear-outs of things that didn't sell. I'm sure that was the case with a lovely linen/rayon summer dress I found. It was a bit big and not my colour, being a tan background with yellow, green and red flower design. But it had never been worn, I'm sure, was only $3.00 on the half price day and was long enough for me.

So I bought it. I figured if my Sis didn't want it (her colours more than mine) I could still try to dye it and take it in.

Sis didn't want it.

Washed it twice in hot water and cold rinse to remove sizing and shrink, removed about 200 buttons. Well, ok, about 10 buttons. Mixed up my two packages of dye, cherry red and a black, simmered for 20 minutes in my biggest pot, rinsed till the water ran clear and got exactly the lovely dark red I was hoping for, with faint flower pattern still visible.

Wet. It was still wet. Oh, oh, if it's the colour I want wet it likely won't be the same dry.

Nope, it dried a nice medium red with tan over tones. Sort of how a nice red might look if one were to roll in the dust. LOL Just to make sure I ironed it all up and sewed all the buttons back on again, all 200, of them. Nope, no go, not with my colouring.

Oh well. It's going to be easier to cut and sew it into napkins that are not as big as some than it was going to be to take in the shoulders, extend the darts and lower the waistline.

How about a second try at the dye before you start cutting? You may get a deeper shade, closer to what you want. FWIW.

What dye did you use? I would make the dye more concentrated and leave it in the dyebath longer. Things always dry WAY lighter than the color you see when wet.

I know, I did think of that. But red is a particularly hard colour to dye. In floor tile, fabric, what have you, red is difficult to obtain and fix. I did a pure wool sweater twice and still didn't get my hoped for colour and it was much lighter to start with. And wool is said to "take" colour more readily than rayon.

I haven't cut yet. I might re-dye.

It was Dylon in the little round, powder packages like the ones you see here:

If there is a better dye I'll have to order it, these are all I can find in stores around me. Would you recommend a different dye?
