I bought some fat quarters at my local sewing store but I fear I overpaid - $2.90 each (buy three get one free right now.) I noticed on eBay 6 fat quarters for $11 (free shipping.) Good idea? Any risk to buying fabric off of eBay?

Ebay can be a great place to buy branded items, such as sewing notions and sewing machines, at a discount. When an item is branded, you have an excellent idea of what you're getting and whether it's a good value.

When it comes to nonbranded sewing items like many fabrics, however, ebay can be a crapshoot. You can get some idea of the general trustworthiness of the seller by looking at their feedback. But that doesn't mean you might not be disappointed with the look and quality of the fabric after it arrives.

However, eleven dollars isn't much of a gamble. If you can afford to risk it, you have little to lose. Since shipping is free, you could place your order for one bundle, and then decide whether or not you want to order more after it arrives.

But if you're very picky about the fabric you use, you might want to stick with your sewing store. It's only a little more expensive, and you have the advantage of knowing what you're getting ahead of time.

Thank you!

Sorry the quarters cost $2.60, not $2.90. Oops. :)

$2.50 for a fat quarter of nice wilting fabric is pretty standard.

Since you got 1 free, you paid $7.80 for a yard of quilting cotton. If it's a high end, such as Moda, you got a good deal. If it's a mid range brand, you got a fair price.
As for Ebay, I buy quilting cotton if it's a brand and print I recognize.

If the quarters cost $2.60 instead of $2.90, then that's all the more reason to consider buying them at your local fabric shop.

Lots of the shops in my area have 4 for $12, so I think the price sounds pretty good!

I buy ton of fat quarters (my latest obsession lol) and quilt shop quality is worth the $2.60! That said I recently purchased some from well rated ebay shops and was really pleased both with the quality and the price - more like $2.00 each.

Right about making sure their feedback is good, and I also look at how long after someone bought did they leave it - In a few days, means they just got it and rattled off Fast shipping, great seller blah blah -- if they waited a week to give Feedback, perhaps they opened the fabric, pressed it, cut into it and have more a feel of how good or bad it was?

Good luck there is so much you can make using Fat quarters when having too much yardage around doesn't make sense.

I love the fabric. Beautiful prints, feels nice when I grope er touch it. I want MORE. lol

Maybe I'll grab some more when I take my Optima in to test bobbins (they're getting in some they think will fit.)

If you love the look and feel of the fabric at the fabric store, then don't waste your time with ebay.
