I was stumped by Pinterest. I signed up but could not figure out what purpose it served.
In another thread, DonnaH explained how Pinterest works like bookmarks but with a visual twist instead of text. That made so much sense! I never found that out by signing up- all I received was information about Followers.

Back around 2004 or so, I used Delicious (online bookmarks) and tags were such an improvement to categories in my browser. Then I added Evernote when it came out to manage everything including site links, images and content. I can see where Pinterest would visually be easier to use in some respects so I may just give it a try know that I know what it does.

I need to understand the social side of Pinterest a bit more. Are the Followers invited or do they just show up! Do they post stuff on your Pinterest site like FB? I like the privacy of Evernote- its not social unless I share it. Is there a private side to Pinterest like with Delicious or is it entirely social?

What happens to the linked picture when the site is removed by the creator or if the URL is changed?

I can answer some of your questions. Followers can be invited or turn up - so both. Some seem to be on a popularity kick, which is fine but is of zero interest to me. In fact if I could have had all my boards as private they would be.

I think it's great to make a folder of visual links - if only it had been around a year earlier when I was trying to research a specific garment type in museum collections around the world. That link would have been so much easier than saving images and the museum page into a spreadsheet.

What a terrific idea about the museums. This would be a fun page to make of places to visit in Sarasota when my grandson arrives. Like a scrapbook of memories.
I just downloaded the app and found a buttin to make it secret or share it with others or just invite certain followers so it does have some privacy options.

I love pinterest! I have a sewing tutorials board and sewing inspiration on my what to wear board. And yes, you can have private boards.

The private boards are new (so they used to be all public), and there's a limit of 3 private boards.

I am a person who really likes Pinterest. 2 years ago I was making a baby quilt for my soon to be born granddaughter, and I had an idea of what I wanted, but my DIL had her own. Living in different parts of the country, it was tedious, but Pinterest saved the day. I could post ideas I saw and she could post ideas she saw on each of our pages and come to an understanding of design, fabric, etc. I can also, in another board, post ideas I like or sewing inspirations, which I can go back and look at, because it is on my board. I have several boards on my different interests, like sewing inspiration, how to links, garden ideas, and as I am remodeling my bathrooms, ideas about that. Certainly I post things and everyone else gets to see them, but it is internet stuff anyway. I did post my homemade quilt, but then took it down. So I get ideas from other posters at pinterest, or for the world wide web. It like your own virtual scrapbook, that others can see.

There are lots of great uses for Pinterest. I think of it as a bulletin board. I have used it to plan a party with decorating, food, drink ideas. I think it would be great for a Places to Visit ideas. I do need to reorganize some of my boards.

Now, your question about what happens when someone deletes something you pinned, I am not sure. I have had times when I clicked on something and it said it no longer existed. When I am repinning someone else's pin, I usually click to be sure it exists. Unfortunately advertisers are getting involved and I have had the experience that a pin links to some kind of advert. What wonderful ideas! I like all the suggestions. I never thought of it as a communication tool. I can see a lot of uses for sewing projects and others.

I haven't figured out how to add just any picture I want to when browsing the web. If there isn't any Pinterest or Repin button then how to I add it to my board?

Well I got onto my computer today and found out how to add the images.

Copy the URL of the page where the image appears.
Navigate to http://pinterest.com and log in.
Click the Add+ button at the top-right corner of the screen.
The Add dialog box appears.
Click the Add a Pin button.
The Add a Pin dialog box appears.

I am still looking for an easier way with my iTouch though.

I use Pinterest as a bullion board or idea folder or as a way to organize online research. It was very handy when we were doing our remodel as I could pin pictures onto that board to show my husband (who was also the architect) or to compare things side by side, such as lights. Now we are going to do some redecorating/ minor remodeling of the rest of the house so I have boards set up for them. Recipes, kids birthday party ideas... it's really very useful.

I have several boards for work (speech therapy) and those are my most followed boards-- most of those followers are people I don't know in person, while the followers of my non-work boards tend to be people I know in real life.

I haven't used Pinterest for sewing ideas as much as I should ...
