Pls help. I love to sew. I just started quilting and have done embroidery in the past. I currently have a 380. But i'm kinda thinking of having a machine where I could use BSR. And embroidery too.

These are two totally different machines with very different price tags. My best advice to you is to take your own fabrics and do a thorough test drive on both. Also have them show you the differences in the embroidery. On the 830 be sure to be shown how to thread for needle and bobbin (sewing and embroidery) then do it yourself with them watching. You'll know which one, if any, is perfect for you.

Like SewBusy63 said very different price range and machine. When you go to test drive the machines take your own thread and fabric samples that you use most often. It makes a huge difference. I was going to buy a machine and when it did not perform well with what I use I decided against purchasing the machine.

Also research the reliability problems the 830s have had. I have a couple of friends whose 830s have never worked after literally years of them trying, their dealers trying, and sending the machines back to Bernina.

Were those the first ones or recent 830s? Most of the folks here love theirs, but theirs are LE models or later. Yes, they did have problems with these at first - my dealer steered me clear back in 2010 when I was machine shopping, so I got the 730, which I love.
But, I think you are totally safe buying today. By all reports, they are bug free now.
Lisa, I think I had a conversation with you back then when I bought my 730 - from the yahoo group! Nice to see you here on PR.

What did it for me was size consideration - I didn't have room for an 830 or 780 and the 580 was perfect for me!

New B560 coming out shortly; has BSR capability and embroidery add-on option. Same screen as the B580.

They have replaced up to 18 parts on the 830...the machine is good to go now. The 580's also had bugs at first. i think it is SOP for new machines from Bernina to be buggy. The 830 is now FIVE years out from introduction and will be changed to the 880 at the end of the year. If the 830 is in consideration it might be a good idea to at least see what the 880 will have. As long as there are not too many changes it SHOULD be safe...?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm just beginning to find my way around. I know one lady had one of the very first machines, and the other lady waited almost 2 years after they were out before buying hers. It would be nice to find out the later ones had no problems, but I sure still feel for my two friends.

I have a new-to-me 730 and am much happier with her than my previous one. I have learned my lesson not to buy the new models. I have also learned to take a lot of different kinds of fabric, lots of threads, and plan to set up and sew all day at the dealer's when I buy a new-to-me machine. If it won't do what I want, it doesn't come home with me.

Life has a way of teaching us, huh?

This old fuddy duddy is too tired for *should.* I'll let you young whipper-snappers tackle the new models from now on. Maybe after you get yours working, I'll buy it from you and let you go on to the next shiny new model!
