It's been about 3 years since this topic was last posted, so I'm reopening it.
I just got a new Juki 735, my first serger. I have a friend who has offered to give me a day or so of classes, but she lives three states away, so I'd like to have some references for when I need help remembering details.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Congrats on your new machine!

I know you've asked for books, but I would like to point out that the Beginning Serger class over on Craftsy should be right up your alley. The instructor uses a Bernina serger that is actually manufactured by Juki --it is practically a twin of the Juki 735. The class is great and is an excellent way to practice using all the features of a serger.

As for books, I think my favorite is. Serger Secrets. I like the step by step pictures that are very clear and easy to understand.

Books that I have found to be really helpful. Ready Set Serge by Georgie Melot, Serge with confidence by Nancy Zieman and Simple Serger Sewing editd by Julie Johnson. Ready Set Serge have projects that you can start and finish in an hour or less and it is designed for folks who are trying to learn to use a serger.

Congratulations!! You will LOVE the 735. I bought one in Feb. and she sews like a dream! I also have the F-600...
Threading is a snap once you have done it a couple of times...

There are many threads on here about the Juki MO-735...on easy threading charts and such. The charts are much easier to follow than the manual that comes with the 735. I've actually printed them and leave them by the 735...

Enjoy and keep us posted!!

Serge With Confidence by N. Zieman addresses different models, functions and effects with a variety of threads and fabrics.

I keep my copy along with the manual right next to my BL Imagine!

Thank you for starting this topic. I bought a Juki MO644D a couple of weeks ago and am acquainting myself with everything it can do. I have put holds on many of these books at my local library!

I also recommend the two serger classes on Craftsy: the Beginner class is great and so is Angela Wolf's class. I purchased both classes while I was still deciding on a machine. I need to go back and watch again so that I can start making samples!

I haven't seen these mentioned yet, but I'll put in a good word for them.

I like "The Complete Serger Handbook" by Chris James, because it has a really good discussion about thread tension, how to adjust it, and how to troubleshoot stitching problems due to improper tension.

I also like "Successful Serging" by Beth Baumgartel, because it has a really complete collection of sewing techniques you can do on the serger. For instance, I learned the flat method of construction for knit tops, such as T-shirts, from this book.

I haven't tried any of the Craftsy classes, but if you are looking for a free alternative, Nancy Zieman has recently done a three-part mini-course on her TV program called "Serger Workshop" that covers all the essentials that you can do with a serger. You can watch it for free online. I thought it was really helpful. The DVDs for the series are also available from Nancy's Notions.

Thanks for all the quick responses.
I've opened the box, but haven't actually taken out my new Juki. I'm using trying to actually finish my entry for the UFO contest as my excuse, but the truth is I'm a little afraid of it. I'll let you know when I take the big step.
