How long does sewing machine oil last?
I've had this container for about 5 years

Is it in a transparent container such that you can see what colour it is? If it is still clear and white, it is OK, but will get yellow and gunky as it deteriorates. Proper storage always extends life - keep out of direct sunlight and temperature extremes.

If it's yellowish or thick, toss it. It should be clear, no smell, and a very light oil. Dritz Zoom Spout Oiler is a nice, light oil for sergers and mechanical sewing machines. It has a pull out spout that reaches out several inches to get in those hard to reach places. I highly recommend it. Remember to always clean out the old oil with rubbing alcohol on Q-tips or something before you apply new oil, it's very important to do this so you don't gunk up you machine. Here is a link:
