My DH has been getting frustrated that he wants a nice greatcoat / overcoat but when he tries one on in RTW he has to get X size because he has a big tummy and then he has short arms and legs. He looks ridiculous with the cuffs rolled up, and the hem touching the ground.
I thought I saw a nice Vogue pattern once but not sure. Any suggestions out there. I've made a couple suit coats so I know I can do it but finding the base pattern will be the trick.

Not a lot of change in mens sewing patterns through the years. Collar/lapel widths etc. might need to be updated but otherwise, a man's coat is man's coat. You might do well looking on Etsy or ebay for a vintage pattern. Throw in if you want single or double breasted. The search engines on both can return a whole heap of things you don't want, but then again, it's always fun to browse patterns.Good luck!

I bounced this question off one of my online friends. He brought up Vogue 2613. It's out of print, but can be found on other sites like Etsy or Ebay. Give that a search.

To get an idea of the styling, here's one in the small sized range on ebay.

VOGUE just put out mens coat pattern 8970. It looks like a pea coat with long and short versions.

I got Burda 7704 to make my many Xl DH with the idea the large pleat would help in the belly department. I haven't made it yet though.
One thing to consider is looking at costume patterns - the men's stuff is fairly standard patterns, usually on the simpler side and go to bigger sizes. The jackets and waistcoats are adaptable, not sure about the knickerbockers thoughAs an example only McCalls civil war jacket could be a starting point.

Don't know if it's the style you're looking for, but quite a few years back I made the folkwear Australian Drover's Coat for my husband, and he LOVED it.

A good alterations person might help with ready to wear. Having it tailored costs a bit but worth it for something like a coat.

I used a Lekala to make one for DH. I was very happy with the pattern.

The suggested Vogue patterns look great and I think I could work with that.

Other than just wanting a really nice overcoat, it seems he also wants to use it to go as Hagrid for Halloween with our daughter as a Hermonie from the first movie.
After reviewing the images, I think starting with a suit coat base, and just make it longer and put walking slits in it, could work. What are your opinions?
