Hi!
I live in Norway and order most of my fabrics from the States.
It seems to me that American webstores have the best prices even when counting in shipping.

But - shipping is still expensive. I might be travelling to Washington DC soon and would like to stock up on fabrics to bring home on the plane. I understand G street fabrics is a good store.

What I particularly want to buy, is rayon knits. Online it seems like Mood Fabrics in NYC is the best place for these. I could order from them and have it delivered to my family in Washington in time. I could also just go to G street and buy knits there. But from their webpage I can't tell if they have a good selection and if they can compete with Mood pricewise.

Does anyone have any suggestions? What would be the best deal?

Buy from both.
G street is really fun so definitely go there but Mood has nice fabrics. I have been to the one in CA.

If you're going to be in the DC area, maybe you can find some time to visit Michael and Sherri at Michael's Fabrics/A Fabric Place in Baltimore. They do have a website but it pales in comparison to their brick and mortar location.

I have only been to the G Street in Falls Church and their selection has been slowly decreasing since I've arrived in this area.

How long will you be in town?

I hadn't thought of that - I mean, that Baltimore is close to Washington:). I know Michael's Fabrics webstore and have understood from various reviews that Michael and Sherri are great people and that their store is wonderful too. So that is a good idea! Thank you!

If I go to Washington, we will only be staying for a week.

( I am very happy to receive tips about other fabric stores in Washington of course..)

G Street doesn't have much by way of rayon knits. They have solid cotton(?) knits, but in limited colors. If you have something in particular you have your heart set on, definitely order from Mood.

Emmaonesock has great rayon knits! I think it is online only but when you're shopping from Norway you might like to check it out. I live in New Zealand and the shipping is among the more reasonably priced ones, and Linda adjusts it down if the actual shipping is less than what the auto calculator tlls you ( it usually is a lot less). I've also just ordered some things from GirlCharlee, she has had good reviews too. Have a great trip!

I used to live in dc, G street was my fav but mainly for cottin shirting and cotton mix type- moodis great of course but I find them expensive..... If I were you, I would think about signing up for Julie's pics on fabricmartfabrics.com- she sends you samples of about 30 ish fabrics per month ( little squares) and they always have these type of fabrics in the mix plus some! Costs about $30 or so/ year, well worth it- plus these are always very affordable! Between $1-10/ yard depending.... You'll really enjoy, promise! Just got mine for August - had rayon Lycra mixes, plus silk charm, ity knits, sweater knits and wrinkle free cotton shirting!!! Spent about $100 but got about 20 yards of fab along with some silk :0) love it! Good luck

To pile on about G-Street, I go to the one in Rockville, which moved to a (much much) smaller location a couple of years ago, really cut the stock, and I think their prices are very high. I would check out Elliott Berman fabrics online as well--they're primarily a wholesaler, and seem to charge retail customers the same Their web site is horrible but their in-house stock is enormous. They will swatch for you, and if you want particular colors, you can call and ask them to send you what they've got in x fabric, y colorway. BTW, when I was there this spring I saw a couple of fabrics I'd seen on other online stores for half the price, so now they are my first stop for distance shopping.

I live about 2.5 miles from the G Street in Rockville, and they are not my go to for knits. I think you are better off online. There are 3 G street locations, and I would definitely go to the Rockville location over Falls Church. I have never been to the Centreville location so can't comment. Make sure you check their website for coupons before you go.

Whether you buy anything, I think it is worth a trip if you enjoy fabric and will be here a week and have the time. Their remnants table is always fun to search through.

If you ever buy quilting cottons, Quilt Patch in Fairfax, VA is fabulous.
