I'm considering getting a serger at some point - my favourite sm are old school mechanical, ie: Husqvarna Viking.

I'm completely lost when it comes to sergers...!

I've owned a few different brands of sergers over the last 25 years -- Bernina, Janome, Babylock and Juki -- from very basic to TOL. At this point in my life, I just need a basic serger since I mainly quilt. A couple of months ago I bought a Juki 654DE serger -- very basic, but it does all I need for about $400. It's a good, sturdy, stable serger.

Brother 1034D

Also look up the reviews of it.

Another thread

It's $200 at Walmart and Amazon right now.

Hahaha DonnaH, I wrote that post... how delighted I was with my new toy, and I still am some 3 months later. I would replace it and that's how I know it's a 'best buy'!

sewknitcrochet - there is a whole board dedicated to Sergers here, great for a look at problems etc... I always look at the problems LOL Reading here, and the 1034D thread DonnaH supplied, helped me enormously when I made my decision.
Serger Thread

Also, here is a link to a 1034D series on youtube.
1034D Serger Techniques

The 1034D doesn't do coverstitching. It uses 3 or 4 threads, you should make sure you don't require a 2 or even 5 thread machine by seeing what stitches these do, in case you would NEED them.... of course, we all WANT them

Good luck with your choice, sergers are great

I don't have the Brother 1034D but I know several people that do and they love them. It's a good basic serger and really isn't that what most people need?

Personally I feel that until you've used one for awhile and know how or how much you'll be using one that the best thing is to get a good entry level machine. That's what the Brother is.

I hope you have wonderful times with your new serger! I love sergers. I have 3.

I have a Janome 644D. It is a basic serger and not hard to thread once you get the hang of it. It cost $600 at the dealer 5 years ago. I think you should be able to find a basic serger much less. I second the Brother 1034D. I don't own one but I read the good reviews and recommended it to my friend who wanted to get a serger but not pay too much.

I got it today...the tension arm (?) had been glued on long ago (which I knew about) it came off in transit, even though the shipper used tons of bubble wrap etc (did an excellent packing job...) My DH thinks it can be glued back on (I concur...)

i personally find the idea of gluing anything related to the machine's tension to be a little scary. is there a dealer in your area that might be able to take a look at it for you to see if it can be repaired?

with so many fast moving parts and the knives, i'd imagine the last thing you would want would be for something to come apart while you are in the middle of serging something.
