This is not a review - couldn't be, with just a few hours with the machine. But yesterday, I was all over the internet searching for any trickle of info. from anyone who might have already received their machine. So, I would like to alleviate that sort of stress for others still waiting for their delivery.
The box it was shipped in was that really nice-sturdy, quality box that Singer uses. But! it was not taped! I was mortified, but thought, well certainly this is the shipper carton and there will be another, taped up box, inside of this box - nope. I unfolded four flaps and there was the value added accessories on top of styrofoam, but hey at least they were there. The rest of the accessories were in the storage area of the bed arm = all accounted for and no packing tape to muck the nice Singer box.
I need a larger foot storage box to accommodate the lock cutter as it measures 3 1/8"(long-front to back) x 2 1/8"(wide-left to right) x 1 1/2"(high).
I marked all feet and ankles with coordinating nail polishes i.e. blue on the metal ankle and blue on some part of each foot that fit to it. and red on the plastic ankle with red on each of the feet that need that ankle.
My Brother 350se feet fit the metal ankle and feed dogs and throat. My Viking prisma style feet fit the plastic ankle and feed dogs and throat.
I had to adjust the bobbin winder's tension spring/disk/thingy to a higher position as my bobbin was only filling half of its length. Also, had to bend parts of the walking foot and stitch in the ditch foot!
The black button on the all purpose foot worked better than the "jean a ma jig" type thing on 8 very thick seam intersections - just a quick test.
There are no adjustment feet on the extension table.
There is only one LED light; it is in front and to the left of needle.
The bed is 6 1/2 inches to the right of needle.
It smells "normal" no "China smell" to it. Yes I know it was not produced in China and I'm glad.
The alphabet stitches out such that you can't just put your cuff or pant leg opening on the free arm and stitch. Rather you have to put the bulk of your RTW(readytowear) in the harp area. So, it stitches with the base of the letters to the left and the top of the letters to the right. And I see no way to turn it around to make life simple.
IMHO with limited testing; it makes a beautiful Singer straight stitch. Have only tested gutermann 100% poly with no adjustments to length or tension.
The thread cutter makes an almost scary noise, but woks well and must have a "wiper", because the top thread is pulled to the back. The tails are a little longer than a quarter inch.
I of course started out on the slowest speed and couldn't hear anything! It's "normal" to quiet normal at higher speeds.
The instruction book or my comprehension lack where the alphabets are concerned. I believe the box-like symbol after the number 9 is the "space".
Also, the book says that when the foot controller is attached and you push the reverse button that the machine will reverse until you let go then stitch forward. That's partially true. If you take your foot off the foot controller then press the reverse button and stitch in reverse then release the reverse button it will just plain stop and not go forward.
The foot controller will take a complete stitch when tapped - ndl down, ndl up, ndl down. If you just turn on your machine and the ndl is up, tapping the pedal will give a half stitch - ndl up to ndl down.
There that's the kind of stuff I was desiring to read about yesterday.
Well, it's lonely and calling for me; gotta go sew!
p.s. it was torture watching the "track your package" and seeing it sit unused and lonely in UPS warehouses for 10 and 12 hours at a shot.
sorry, I don't see a spell check.

Mine arrived today just like yours, box not taped shut - LOL, but everything was there and as it should be. I was overwhelmed by the number of feet. I also haven't had time to sew on it all, but bobbin winding was intuitive, threading and using the needle threader. I can't wait to dig into it tomorrow.
I have a Viking Opal that I love to pieces, but it went in for service for five days and I missed it. I thought the Singer would be a very nice back up. I would like to learn some of specialty techniques that were demonstrated!

I'm interested to hear of everyone's upcoming sewing experience on the 9970. With the incorporation of what sounds to be some Viking features....foot pedal tap for needle up/down, pressure sensor, etc., I hope it turns out to be an awesome deal for you!

Where was it made? Hoping to hear good news - Taiwan maybe? Class manufacturing of Janomes goes on there. HHHmmm.....I loved watching Darlene with this machine!

For those in the know, I'd love to learn the differences between the 9960 and the 9970. Did the 9960 come with that pressure sensor, for example?
Let's just say all modern sms are well represented in my studio.

Yes, it was made in Taiwan! On HSN it tells everything under
specs, features, info, etc. Looks like a lot of machine for the
price. Would be nice if they added a knee lift, or pivot and it ran a little faster ! Can't have everything... but I would pay a little more for those options !

Mine came in today. I also have the 9960 as well. Mine was sealed, but I haven't unboxed it yet - plan to do so tomorrow. I have a small project (Jeans cross body bag for my wife) for it and I'll be happy to share my opinion when completed.
Just a hack that sews for a living. ;)
