Hi All,
I am pretty new to sewing and finding materials. I was able to go to JoAnne Fabric but, I had no luck finding any fabric. I am trying to make a gym bag or duffel bag. I know that standard duffel bags use Polyester. Or at least that is what is listed on other gym / duffel bags I am modeling mine after. Does anyone know where I can find different grades of polyester?

Thank,
Steve

The Rainshed They also have a toll free number. You could tell them what you're looking for, or have them suggest a fabric. I haven't ordered from them, but others on PR have, and like them. Good luck.

A lot of bags are made of Cordura nylon.

Ripstop nylon might be another option; the Joann's near me carries it in several different colors.

I looked into the ripstop and that seems way to thin. The bag that I was thinking is more like and actual gym bag where you can put your shoes and even a basketball into it..

It wouldn't be waterproof, but canvas is an option and is durable, breathe able, easy to sew, and washable. You can find canvas in any fabric store.

Try the sport weight nylon fabric which is heavier than ripstop. I used the sport weight to make carry-on suitcases when we went to Alaska several years ago. If you click on my name, you can go to my profile and find the review I did. These suitcases were stuffed and were checked when we joined our cruise group and then on the flight from Nome to Anchorage. They did get knocked around a bit and are still holding up quite well.

The price is really affordable and with a 40% off coupon, downright cheap.

Seattle Fabrics has a lot of outdoor fabric and athletic fabric. Might be worth it to browse their website. I have been to their physical store, and they were very nice and helpful

it doesn't matter what type of sewing you do. you are sewing, and sewing is good.
