I am going to Tyson's Corner for work but will all Sunday and Thursday to shop for fabric ( or sight see I guess). Can you recommend anywhere in particular?

G Street has 3 locations with the relocated Rockville store being largest. I find them to be spotty on selection and service but if in area, worth visiting. Warning....the markup is very high when you shop fabrics online and see same in G Street. This is their perogative but I think other fabric sellers know their competition better. For example, I saw a silk/cotton sateen there two weeks ago....remembered same fabric for just a few dollars a yard clearance at Fabric Mart. I just bought same fabric at Sawyer Brook clearance for about $16/yd. g Street had it featured on display at over $50.00/yd.

Better yet, drive a little north to A Fabric Place in Baltimore. That is the best fabric store in DC area for quality and price....but especially the family service. They will pick you up at train station in N. Baltimore. (with an advance call)

Or, if you want to go an hour or so south instead of north, go to Culpeper, the new location of Exquisite Fabrics which was in DC until last year. They have apparel fabrics (not home dec or quilting) to die for. Not sure what you are looking for. If quilting is your thing, there's a quilt shop on the same street called 145 Art and Design, and another quilting store or two in the town of Warrenton. Farther south in Charlottesville there are a few home dec and quilt stores. It's a nice day trip. (Most of these stores are closed on Sundays).

I think that Tina Chester put together a list of local fabric stores that was a hospitality handout at the ASG annual convention held in the DC area earlier this month. She's president of the Northern Virginia chapter of the American Sewing Guild, so you can e-mail her at northernvirginia at asg dot org and request that she e-mail the list to you.

As for the Rockville G Street store, it downsized considerably a few years ago when it moved to Nebel Street. Everything is now on one floor. The wool and designer platforms were consolidated into one MUCH smaller space. Even the button and notions area is a shadow of what it used to be. However, it is accessible by Metro if you don't mind walking a few blocks. Also, Accents Beads is a block or two from G Street, and I think it's the biggest bead store in the area.
