Recommend a LONG ruler?
At least 36", or even longer?

Not much to add to the subject line! I'm fed up with my wooden yardsticks, and it would be awesome to have a ruler long enough for the full-length skirts I make (which are often made from straight yardage pleated to a waistband, so I cut out a LOT of big rectangles!)... and it would be a bonus if that ruler were actually straight.

...And didn't cost a fortune? (But that might be asking too much!)

Last night I resorted to marking a curtain rod with masking tape and using it as a jig! Which worked nicely, except I have other plans for that curtain rod.

Suggestions?

Best bet to seek out a hardware store. Home Depot has a 48 in aluminum straight edge ruler for less than 10 bucks.

I got my 36" and 48" metal rulers from hardware stores. They were not too expensive.

Another vote for a hardware store or builder's supply. As another who does full length skirts, you will wonder how you managed without it! Two features of mine that I like - one, that it is fairly heavy so it functions as a bit of a pattern weight and two, a hole in the end so I can hang it on a hook on the sewing room wall the rare time it gets put away.

EmpireŽ Aluminum Straight Edges; 72 in From Quill is 16.00. No financial interest, just found it online. It has a hanging hole at the end for storing. I just might order one. FYI

I bought a 4" x 36" clear ruler in the quilting dept of Joann's. I use it when I make flags. Can be used for rotary cutting. It was half price with a coupon.

I also have a 2" x 48" metal straight edge that is used by contractors for sheet rock. You probably can find one in a hardware store. I don't use this one with the rotary cutter.

Very interesting information!

Just looked online and found a 72in
and a 96in on Amazon.

I need to check if the local hardware stores here carry such a thing.

Does cork backing help or hinder it's usefulness?

A long ruler that's too heavy may end up tearing paper, and it can be a bear to move around.

I bought a roofing square once, and found it extraordinarily ill suited to the task.

Fairgate aluminum straightedge.

$14 for 48 inches.

Here's a 72 inch one for 22 bucks

Of course, if you want something that's good for cutting against, then you're talking big bucks.
