We are having trouble with our 15-91, I have dealt with a few worn parts on this machine and thought is was ready to go. It turns out we are having a problem with the thread from the lower spool bunching up like crazy, the top is fine. The other problem is the needle is not wanting to pierce the fabric without coaxing ie turning the wheel by hand.

Can anyone help us with this problem?

We are using all purpose thread and an unknown size blue needle, on fabric thick and thin.

Usually, when you've got thread loops on the bottom, it means there's something wrong with the upper tension. The thread may not be in the tension disks, so lift your presser foot when you thread the machine, so the tension disks are open, then the thread can get into them. Then make sure your upper tension is set at 3, then adjust it from there.

Check your needle. Is the flat side on the left? Are you threading the needle from right to left?

Never, never use a needle designed for "knits" in a straight stitch machine.

I will check those tips out thanks! We haven't been paying close enough attention to some of those details.

Hello! Nice to "meet" you here at PR. Hope your sewing issues are soon resolved.

It's probably past time to change the needle...it could be bent or worn out.

Also...one should always know what needle his/her sewing machine is sewing with.

Thin fabric will need a different size needle than thick fabric.

Always use the correct needle for your sewing machine, the thread, and the fabric.

Singer makes a neat "tomato" type pin cushion that is pre-marked for handy needle storage when changing needles for different projects. Besides the type of needles it's also marked for hours of use...so that a sort of fresh needle can be saved to use for another time...while a needle that is on its last stitch can be known it's ready to throw away safely.

Here is a link to it: Singer Machine Needle Cushion at Joann Fabrics

Edited to add: Here's a video of threading a 15-91...maybe a visual refresher on the threading path is needed. Singer 15 Threading ! - Youtube

Also...at the end of this next video is how to test the tension on a bobbin case. The machine is certainly not a 15-91...but the bobbin case test should still be applicable. Installing bobbin in singer (bobbin case tension test at end of video)
