Best all-purpose thread

I've become increasingly unhappy with the Coats and Clark all-purpose thread I've been using for years. They seem to have changed to something that is coarser. I think it is causing the problems I've been having with the tension on my Bernina 931. Any all-purpose thread you readers recommend?

Since it seems you prefer an all-purpose, I'd recommend Gutermann poly. Zillions of GOOD colors, low lint and inexpensive; available at JoAnn's and often discounted.

I am still using C&C along with Robinson Anton and Gutterman. I see no difference in how my machines sew.

When was the machine last serviced? The tension may need to be cleaned, which you might do yourself by raising the presser foot and flossing the tension with unwaxed dental floss.

I've never had a moment's problem with Gutermann threads in any of my Berninas, my 930 included. Gutermann All Purpose is usually available at local fabric stores. But it is also on sale now in 400 colors at a great price online at WAWAK , 1,094 yards for $1,86! The Gutermann Mara 100 is the same as the Gutermann All Purpose.

Well they did change something. It used to be that Coats and Clark Dual Duty sold all over the place in their metal racks, was cotton covered polyester core. For like many numerous decades. They still sell it that way some places, but not in major fabric chain stores in the big racks there anymore. Now that, is called Dual Duty XD instead, which is polyester covered polyester core thread instead. To know which you got, and if you bought it someplace in the last few years, you probably have to look at the label on it, hopefully some of the label is still there maybe.

Not saying one is better or worse than the other, just if you notice a difference in your hand with your fingers on it, one could be the older cotton covered polyester core kind and one could be the newer polyester covered polyester core XD labeled kind instead.

That explains my suspicion that C&C had changed their all purpose. I will look now before I buy. Thanks so much for the information.

I use a lot of Gutermann poly thread because everyone sells it but much prefer Rasant, which I believe is cotton covered polyester core. Mettler Metrosene is gorgeous too but harder to come by. The latter two aren't as linty and aren't prone to shredding, unlike the Gutermann.

My Bernina 930e will accept most threads, but her favorite seems to be Mettler Metrosene, so I buy it when I find it, online or brick and mortar. However, she takes all Gutermann threads nicely, except for the Mexican products of some years ago.

I use Guttermann thread almost exclusively. It is a good thread, many many colors.
Different blends. Not too expensive.

I use Mettler Metrosene, though on occasion will use Gutterman. For a long time, I used nothing bu Metrosene, after C&C got to be very knotty and linty in the late '80s. Gutterman was not great for a while, in the early '90s, it was coarse and very linty.
For most of my garment sewing, I use neutral colors - off-white, ecru, light, medium or dark gray for construction; black or navy if my fabric is that. I use matching or contrast colors for top-stitching or buttonholes.
