I just got an 830. I have had problems with thread breaking, actually shredding inside the machine. I am using John Flynns masterpiece thread in the top and bottom line in the bobbin. I am not sure what is going on with the thread breakage. My dealer is way over the mountain from me so just dropping in is not an option. Any suggestions?

Are you straight stitching or free-motion quilting?

Dark colored thread, black in particular can be weakened by the over dying process.

Have you tried another brand or color of thread?

Are sure it's shredding inside the machine? I would change needles and be sure the top thread is not catching on something to prevent it from feeding properly.

John Flynn's thread is Sew Fine not Masterpiece and I use it as my preferred thread for lots of my sewing and yes I do use a lot of black! I an using a 710 at the moment but it is very fine thread and easily flows though a 70 needle. Are you threading with the pressure foot up?

New or old 830?

The 830 should be fine with virtually any thread. Try using a 80 or 90 Top Stitich needle. The eye larger on the top stitch and the crevice that leads to the eye along the shaft serves as another guide.

I would highly recommend that you watch the "Dr. Bob Threadology" video on Superior Threads website. According to the manual some stitches dooooo require a tension adjustment also, it is a misnomer to think one would never have to adjust tension, so I would go straight to the manual for trouble shooting that also...
good luck. I have the 820, and I can run anything through it successfully. Some threads even require lubrication-- you know, people forget these things or have just never had the education...or never go back to their manuals after initial familiarization...so exhaust these avenues first would be my advise...

brand new 830, you are right , sew fine, blue not black, using a universal point size twelve needle. However, it also shredded some cotton mercerized in white...not sure what is going on.

My suggestion would be for you to join the bernina_series8 yahoo group. They have lots of knowledgeable and helpful people on the list as well as help files posted. Were you able to take any mastery classes for your new 830 -- there's a lot to learn on it but it will sew beautifully once you learn all about it.
