Finally I found an oldie at Good Will that looked promising...although it was missing just about everything...no manual...NO bobbin case...no bobbins...no spool cap...and no other feet than the zig zag foot that was on it. Did I say it looked promising?

Copied a free manual from singerco.com...ordered a bobbin case from sew-classic.com...figured out how to get the bobbin case in...wound class 66 bobbins from Joann's...figured out how to thread it from the copied manual...used a couple of thick spool pin felts from sew-classic as a make shift spool cap...then ut oh...the stitch selector dial...which I had checked that it moved when at the Good Will Store...is not in sync with the actual stitches...meaning that if the dial is set to #6...then the stitch made is the # 10 stitch...and so forth.

Imagine my surprise when I had the dial set to a stitch and it went backwards...I said to myself wow it's sewing in reverse...so checked out the reverse and it was fine...then noticed what it was doing before was making one side of a buttonhole!

Not only is the knob off mark by four stitch patterns...the selector does not set right at the number markings...but rather in between them. Is it possible a previous owner removed the selector knob and put back on out of align to the numbers? I don't want to try to pull off the knob without knowing if it can BE pulled off without breaking it.

Also...I tried to lift off the top of the sm to look inside...but the width selector slider knob won't go through it's slot so the top can come off. Does anyone know if that little knob can be pulled off without breaking it and that it can be put back on?

Wondering how a tech would get that slider knob off to get the top off to look inside?

Well...I don't have a friendly tech person to ask just to ask.

So...anyone have their 2 cents to suggest something?

I will check back later for any (hoping) replies. Right now I am on my way to Joann's to buy thread and bobbins.

Can't answer your question, but I've got bobbins and a large spool cap from my old Singer 9410 you can have. Traded it in few years ago. It looks similar to the images of 9420s I found. In 1990, I only remember the 9410 and 9417 in that line.

The rectangular black stitch width knob on the zig zag lever, pulls straight off, the metal piece it's sitting on, so then you can get the top off of the machine, with a little maneuvering. Goes back on, the sme way. Then look at your stitch cam in there and watch the stitch fingers riding it, to see if all is working. Probably all stuck and gunked up with a bunch of old caked on grease turning kind of concrete like by now. Good luck, I bet it works fine after you degunk and re oil and re grease it.

I'm with beauturbo; it's something with your cam stack. It's a great machine if you can get it to work.
