I just finished up a very easy and very fast muslin for this dress;

The insets in the front on one hip are a little fluffy, as if the fabric is pooling over the seam. Trimming the SA helped and notching helped too. I used a poly jersey from JA, and a light press didn't make any difference. Should I try picking the seam apart and sewing a larger SA in that area?
edited to add: I followed instructions and stay stitched the front, and then had a lot of trouble easing the inset in. I used a ZZ 1.0 width and 2.5 length for the seam.

Hmm. I've never found success with stay-stitching a knit the traditional way - in my experience using fusible tape or just steaming after stitching the seam keeps things in reasonable shape. Maybe the insets stretched out at the stitch line where you stay-stitched them? You might need to rip out the stitching and repin, easing to fit. Just my initial thoughts.

Thanks Laura, My thoughts exactly, and I steamed the area this morning. It is improved but not perfect. I ignored the stay stiching for the back insets, as I thought that might have been a problem.

Thanks again, marec

I think you were smart not to stay stitch those back insets. At Sarah Veblen's ASG seminar that I attended she said that she almost never stay stiches. She said that watching most people sew, they can't help but pull that seam and stretch it, doing exactly what the stay stitching is supposed to prevent. She siad to handle the fabric gently and infrequently and stay stitching won'r be necessary.

Thank you Jane. I have spent this summer making the silliest mistakes in my sewing-I am distracted with other hobbies and hurrying.
