The pattern I'm using calls for half inch bias binding. I'm having brain freeze and can't work out whether this means half an inch folded, or half an inch unfolded. Apologies for stupidity and thanks!

Folded.

Are they calling for single-fold or double-fold bias tape? Either way, the 1/2-inch is when it's folded.

Soooo, 1/2-inch single-fold bias tape is a 1-inch bias strip, and the two edges are folded toward the center of the strip, so now the folded strip measures 1/2-inch.

1/2-inch double-fold bias tape is a 2-inch strip with the two edges folded to the center (the first or "single" fold), which gives you a 1-inch single-fold tape. THEN the tape is folded in half again (the second or "double" fold), which gives you a folded strip that is 1/2-inch wide.

Clear as mud, I know.
Edited to add: And NOT a dumb question. I've been doing this sewing stuff for several decades now, and I have to stop and think it through every time I deal with bias tape. "OK, so if it's 1/2-inch double-fold then [insert bias tape math here]..."

Thanks!

Well, actually what it calls for now I read it closely is 1/2" foldover BRAID. I just had a quick google for that and there isn't much and it's all horrible. I think it was the sort of thing that existed in 1974 when the pattern was issued, but not now. I quite fancy a nice patterned bias binding anyway though.

What are you making? I have recently become totally mad for bias binding, and have been binding everything in sight! LOL I seem to have the best luck adjusting/customizing the size of the binding for each project. If you're doing something really lightweight, like binding seams or armholes on a chiffon blouse, 1/2" might be too wide (3/8" is a nice size). I've also combined widths on projects where different areas were bulkier--like this little bag, where the top strip was 3/4", while the rest of it is 1/2". But you can't tell the difference in the finished project.

(I, too, must Think Hard about binding every time I do it. I've finally come up with a method that works for me--I decide how wide I want the finished binding to be, which is usually about 1/8" less than called for. Then I add ~1/4" to 3/8" for a fold along one side and press it using a jig made from a long hatpin stuck in my ironing board. I fold one side and leave the other edge unfolded. I sew the unfolded edge to the garment and then flip the folded edge over to the reverse and hand-tack it down. That way, you can finesse the tape as you need, without worrying about having the crease line show if you don't get it lined up 100% exactly right.)

Good point. I'll have a play and see what width looks good. I actually got a metre of gingham for binding in the end - at least you know where your diagonal is!
It's for this pattern: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/143586832?ref=fb2_tnx_image

Finished product! With hindsight, I would have made the binding 1cm rather than 1/2" and then it would have been perfect, but I'm still happy with it.
