I cam across this while looking for something else. It is too funny. The Singer people have a lot to answer for:

That advice is nearly the opposite of what I do. I might make sure the bed is made, dog is walked, and maybe dishes done before I settle in. That is because I am anal and can't stand looking at the clutter... it drives me nuts!!!

But if someone drops over unexpectedly they do so at their own peril. Odds are I don't even answer the doorbell!!

Thanks for the good laugh!!

"urgent housekeeping chores" to mean means "toilet is overflowing".

Whew, I'm so glad this is from 1949. You scared me for a minute.

If I were sitting there thinking that much about my appearance, I'd be so nervous I couldn't enjoy doing anything. Relaxing in front of my sewing machine would be the last thing on my mind.

Is this why I feel I have to do a load of laundry before I sew? It's no wonder I don't get anything done!

I saw a really funny version of this.

The advice to 'never buy a sewing machine with a mirror in it' cracks me up!
And NOPE I don't sew with my machine in the sink OR on the bed, so dirty dishes and unmade beds are no problem. (why bother making beds? You are only going to un-make it in a few hours! What a pointless task!)

I like "Now" much, much better. Especially the "What?" which is what I said when I read the need for the "little bag of French chalk".

I tend to do the old version, but *I* feel better and can sew better when I have a clean house and I look decent.

As to the french chalk, I am gonna assume this is the crap I got in an old notion lot in a pretty bag that acts a lot like chalk at a pool hall (taking in the era, no A/C means sweaty prints on textiles).
