I was wanting to get into a good machine but without really laying down heavy money as I simply don't have the ability.

A local person has a Bernina 180E with the three hoops and embroidery system, 7 feet (1, 20, 40, 4, 5, 2A, 3). Software version upgraded to 4.1.
records of being taken to the dealer 4 times for regular maintenance.
stitch count 968,000 and hours: 39.

machine is spotless and operates as it should.
the seller says her bottom line is $600. Would this be a fair price?
I appreciate any input. thank you

I wouldn't sell mine for that price. It is a good buy if everything is okay.

Of course you are going to have to have a 32 bit computer to run V 4 on.

I have V 4 and to upgrade you have to do a dongle change on a computer with the old software in order to get the new codes on a upgraded dongle that will work with the newer computers. So just know there might be a few glitches with the software. The upgrade to the newest version 7 is about $500. It is coming out soon.

That is a very good price for the 180. which is a very good machine. When I talked to dealers recently, they would not even consider taking them in trade. If you can resolve the software issue it will be a good machine to get started with embroidery. Also it will be a pretty steep learning curve if you haven't had an embroidery machine before.

Not to ask a naive question, but what improvements will I see upgrading it to version 7 over what is there now? no problem with the 32 bit machine. I have one that runs windows 7. not sure if that version of windows will be an issue or not.

Also, in regards to the hours and stitch counter. Can this be reset?? and if it could, would that not mean the actual overall hours of use or stitches are unknown? I have read somewhere that these counters can be reset as many like to know the hours and stitches it took to complete a specific project. I am just curious if these counters I am seeing on the 180 are overall use, or could have been reset. thanks

I will like to know if you get V 4 installed on your machine. If you can get that done, that would be wonderful. You might try to do it before you buy the machine to see if it works. Be sure to read up on the Bernina website about what to do. I believe you may have to download a driver.

You might try to download the free Artlink from the Bernina website and see if it works. If you get that done, then the software may install ok. Artlink is a basic teaser transfer program that Bernina gives out free. The owner may have a copy of it as it came with the machine.

By the way, you will have to get a cord from RadioShack with a USB to Serial port cable so that you can transfer your designs. The 180 comes with the old style Serial Port Connection rather than the USB. If your laptop has the Serial Port then you don't have to buy the new cord.

I have no idea what the new software is like, but since my laptop is 64 bit, I knew I would have to upgrade. I just hope it all works with Windows 8 (a pox to Microsoft for that).

I don't think an owner would know how to reset the hours, but I do know that when I had to have the electrical board on my 150 replaced, the hours were lost.
