I've just finished a really lux sleepwear set for myself out of silk crepe back satin. It's really the weight of heavy charmeuse.

I'd like to hand embroider a discreet monogram near the hem, but I am not sure it will work on such liquid-y material.

Has anyone done this? Any advice? Tips?

What I would do:

Trace the monogram onto a transparent piece of fabric (my all-time favorite is silk organza), place it on the wrong side of the charmeuse, baste into place with fine silk thread and transfer the design to the front of the charmeuse with a small running stitch and thread the color of the finished monogram. Embroider, then remove basting and trim organza close to the design.

If you use a frame be sure to wrap the lower hoop with white bias tape for padding and use tissue paper or white cotton between the top hoop and the charmeuse, carefully cutting an opening through which to embroider. Don't stretch the fabric too tight and remove the hoop EVERY TIME you put the project aside for more than a few minutes. This sounds like a lot of extra effort but will help avoid a permanent mark on the fabric.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Briar Rose! Everything you say makes sense. It makes me feel confident that I can do this without ruining the project.

I love hand embroidery but have only done it on children's clothing.

I love the idea of adding a monogram and am so happy to have see this thread.

What a great idea!

You are certainly welcome, my dear. I've been doing hand embroidery for 54 years and am always delighted to see any sign of a resurgence in interest.
