If passing on a link to a petition isn't allowed on here, please feel free to remove this thread.

My cousin and her husband are beekeepers in eastern Ontario. They sent out this petition today. I'm just passing it on. Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem -- our food supply depends on them.

Here's the petition. Thanks. Please pass on the message if this is something you feel strongly about.

Save Ontario Bees

I don't live in Canada but as a former agronomist I'm with them all the way. Hope the petition does some good.

Agree with what BriarRose said and good luck! I am in Northern California and every spring our Japanese Maple is swarming with bees for several weeks. I can't go near the tree or trim any bushes around it. Well...sometimes I do but I am very quiet and don't disturb them! Bees are so beneficial in the garden, so I let them "bee". :-)

Thanks, BriarRose and SewLibra. I just e-mailed my cousins and asked if there's anything else I can do. This seems to me like a warning that a tsunami is coming. A third of our food requires bees for pollination, and their numbers have dropped by 35% just in the past two years. I'm sure this isn't going on just in Ontario, either.

This topic has been moved from Regional Communities to Miscellaneous

Thanks, Pyrose. I chose Regional Communities because the petition is for Ontario, but I'm sure you're right that this issue is important to people everywhere.

I signed. I added the message that I hope Ontario will do this and that the rest of Canada will follow suit. This is a very serious and important issue that transcends borders and politics. Our ecosystem and agriculture abilities are doomed without bees playing their part.

That and I love honey. Hope it works.

Several countries in Europe have already restricted the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in order to protect bees. Good luck with your petition.

Are you sure they're not just on strike? According to this documentary, that's what happened.
