Earlier last week I was flirting with buying a 180E. Was set to go pull the trigger on it when an estate sale ad popped up locally. It had said there was a Bernina sewing and embroidery machine in the estate. That could mean a lot of things and since there was no detail or photos in the ad I had to go to see what it was.

I get there and the sister of the deceased showed me the unit. It had apparently come back from servicing in April and was still in wrap. Taking the plastic off it said it was an artista 730. it included a few hoops and the embroidery attachment. some software. some card converter she said would allow me to use non Bernina cards with it. about 10 feet. a BSR as she put it and a rolling case. she threw in a couple large cases of embroidery thread. I am not familiar with Bernina models because my past experience has been Brother or Pfaff. Anyway, she said she would like to get $800. All I had was $725 and she said she'd take it. It has a nice color screen but am guessing there will be a bit of a learning curve from my Pfaff which was not as advanced. I am curious when they made the 730? The person claimed it was bought it 2009 new. I see on the web site they make a 710, 750 and 780. Just curious from when to when the 730 was made and if it's a good machine for that money. Thanks

Will she let you try it out? That is an unbelievable price. This machine is a windows operating system and is a little slow startup. I bought mine in 2007 and I would not part with it. My dealer offered $3000 as a trade when I bought my 830. No way I would part with it . There is a small learning curve but nothing major. Ask if you can call the dealer at serviced the machine. If the dealer says its good, buy it.

While the 730 was never my favorite machine, due to the slow Windows operating system it uses, it is still a fabulous machine and sews like a dream. At that price, even if it needs new computer boards, it's a STEAL!

I took it as she agreed to the $725 I had. It had apparently just been in for it's checkup. Powered up and ran fine in the short time I have played with it. I have been spending more time with my nose in the manual.
I was just curious if it was a decent machine and value. I have no clue what it sold for new or how it rates.
Does this machine have any idiosyncrasies that I should keep an eye open for or adapt to in order to get the most of it?
I did notice it took a little while to boot up. But not a big deal to me.

Great price!!! I was looking at upgrading my machine (still am if I get lucky ;-)) and most of the 730''s ran close to $3000 used from private parties. I found one posted for $1700 which was a great price and two days later she reposted it for $2700.....! I'm sure you will love it, when I checked on the machine other than starting up time everyone said it was a fabulous machine! For what you paid that is an unbelievable price! Congrats!!!!

That's a fabulous bargain, they've been running around $3000 used. *If* you don't love it, you could always resell it.

I sold mine for $3K a few years back, so your deal is great.
Mine sewed very well. It takes a loooong time to boot up and it drove me crazy. But the machine is high quality.

Thanks for the information. I agree after doing a little with it that it is worlds apart from my Brother that broke and seems quieter than my Pfaff.
It does tend to like some thread better than others. I am thinking that I got quite lucky!

Just reading this a year later. I have this machine and absolutely love it. You got a great deal on it! I really hope you are enjoying it. The start up time is about 90 seconds, but once it's warmed up, it's ready to go. I bought mine as a demo machine and because it had not had another owner, I was able to get Bernina's full warranty. While in the shop a year and a half after I bought it, the shop told me they would give me the entire $3000 I paid for it toward a used Bernina 830, but I am not ready to give up the 730 yet. The fact that they were willing to give me the entire price I paid for it tells me that it's a really good machine.
