At the risk of sounding like a huge, whiny brat -- WHY is *everyone* (see? Dramatic) using services like Google+ and Disqus as commenting media instead of using the blog embedded comments?

Some of us don't want everything from everywhere tracked all over the internet. Ok, well I don't. There are so many blogs I read but don't interact with because no, I would NOT like to share my comment with my enter Google+ circle, thank you. And no, I would NOT like (with disqus) to have every comment I make anywhere on the internet to be available for all to read.

Meh.

I don't use Disqus or Google+ on my blog for exactly that reason, but a lot of people do because the comment systems on blogs have spambots that target them, and the more widely linked your blog and blog post is the more spambots target you. The easy fix (turning on captcha in the embedded system) puts EVEN MORE people off. In other words, if you're a super popular blogger and you write a post that gets linked all over the internet, you get hundreds and hundreds of spam comments.

For a blogger like me (maybe 35 readers, maybe a couple of comments left by those readers on the occasional post, hardly anybody links to me -- not that I am complaining, I am not out to be a big name blogger and don't really care, but just to give you an indication) it's not that much of a big deal to deal with spam. I get a couple of spams a week I deal with. On the other hand I have a friend with a (non-sewing) blog who gets upwards of 500 real comments and 1500+ spam comments on her blog every day, and the spam filter catches maybe half of the spam. She has to go through and manually delete all the rest or have her blog post comments filled with a million anonymous Chinese spambots selling Viagra... or use a system with a better spam filter, i.e. disqus.

One woman. One sewing machine. One giant stack of fabric. What could possibly go wrong?

Ohhhhh. That's a reasonable -and helpful- explanation. Thanks!

Totally hadn't thought about it from that angle.

I guess this tells me where I am in the blogging world. (Intermittent visitors and no spam so far)

I definitely like being an Internet nobody.

I neither Facebook nor blog and I don't think I've ever heard of disqus. I am, however, a moderator for another forum and it was hell on wheels for a while until we got the spam under control. It's a pain to have to screen every one who registers but worth the effort in the long run. You can imagine the kind of spam and trolls a belly dance site gets.

Sweet! I was originally a ChemE major until my classes started to focus on plant design, etc. I didn't want to do that.

Now I work at a forensic engineering firm (never imagined this side of it) with chemical, mechanical, electrical, structural, metallurgical, and materials science engineers. It's AWESOME. :)
