Looking for a dress form for my petite daughter

I'm looking into a dress form to mimic my 24-yr-old daughter. She's only 4'11" and 100 lbs soaking wet. I've sewn for her all her life, but now she's 500 miles away and even meeting halfway is complicated. She works in a bank with FBI aspirations, so professional clothes are a must. She buys many of her White House/Black Market and Ann Taylor clothes online (e-bay, boards, etc.) because as she says "I'm too poor to be so little." Any comments on dress forms for a petite young woman would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Can you give her length measurements-- nape to waist, hip depth, and so on?

The only thing I can think of is a professional dress form like this

She could try to do a duct tape double and ship it to you unstuffed. I'm sure it would give the shippers something to talk about...

I'm 4'11", and weigh about the same as your daughter. It was challenging finding a dress form, especially since my shoulders are so narrow. In the end, I bought a petite store mannequin from Palay Display, and padded it to fit me (with help from my Mom) with the Fabulous Fit padding system. I've had SuzieQ for about a year, and don't know what I'd do without her. She's pinnable, too! Just wish she had arms and legs.

This discussion of the uniquely you dress form may be useful, if your daughters nape to waist length is approximately correct for the petite form. You may need to mail the cover back and forth a few times to get the fit exact.

I am a manager at The Shop Company, and I think we may just have the perfect form for you. Our Professional Female Dress Form w/ Collapsible Shoulders in a size 0 is a rather petite little thing, and if the measurements are about right, this may just be the form you are hunting for. Hop on over to our site, and feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

If it is not too much to ask, as we expand our professional dress form line, we would like to reach out to all the sewers of the world for suggestions as to features they would like to see in a dress form. If anyone in this community has feedback they would like to share, we gladly welcome it.

Happy Sewing!

legalsecty, you're so sweet to sew for her. I'm sure it will save her a lot of $. I'm an 1" taller than your daughter. I use to pay an arm and a leg for work clothes at Ann Taylor because the clothes sorta fit. Years ago I made a duct tape dummy, got back into sewing and have never looked back. The problem with a pre-made form is that they might not be petite proportioned in the same places that your daughter is. A lot of time back lengths, narrowing shoulders etc can't be adjusted. Maybe the next time you see her you can make a dress form and pant form. Or as another person suggested she can make one and ship it to you.

My other suggestion would be for you do make designed modifications on patterns that you've already sewn for her and know fit. Good luck.

Happy Sewing!

Thought I would give some input here since that post might feel almost like suspicious solicitation to some members. I have been eyeing these forms for months and last week I finally ordered one for my birthday. I ordered on Monday and it arrived on Saturday. Great service, imho. It's at my house, DH received the box, but, horrors, I am not at my house for the holidays, arrrrgh! I can't wait to get back and open the box and spend some quality time with my new sewing room pal!

Earlier this year I did a chat on The Shop Company's website and I chatted with one of the owners I believe who had all the answers to my picky questions. At that time the only measurements were bust waist hip I think and all the measurements were in whole numbers. I asked if they were rounded up and yes, they were. I said that for sewers it would be very helpful to have the exact numbers and to have all the various typical dress form measurements so we could see that they were standard sizing. I was very happy to see that now the site does have all the numbers on the page for that form.

I'll be reviewing and talking about this form when I get back home but that won't be until some time in January.
