I have Kwik Sew 3740 and the cowl is too overwhelming for my height. Read reviews about Kwik Sew 3032 and wonder if cowl would be better for me but since they're from the same pattern company, I don't want to purchase it if it's the same. If not, any suggestions on how to decrease amount of fabric for cowl.

Thank you

You can easily cut down the cowl height. Trace the pattern, to preserve the original. And don't change the cowl-to-top seamline (the bottom of the pattern pieces) or the back neck seam (don't make the pieces shorter) or they won't fit the top. You want the pieces thinner, not shorter.

Just reduce the pattern depth and use a turned-over dinner plate or whatever else you can find to smoothly draw the new pattern line from the back neck seam to center-front.

Do the top pattern piece first, and then cut down the under collar the exact same amount you took off the top.

What I do is use the cut-off paper from the top collar pattern as my pattern for the amount to reduce the height of the under collar.

You should have the exact same length of "comma"-shaped patterns as the originals, just not as deep.

My favorite cowl-neck top pattern is Kwik Sew 3036. The cowl is cut as a rectangle, the ends stitched together, then folded (right sides out) and stitched to the blouse. You can reduce the amount of drape by cutting the rectangle down and making it shorter. I have done this on fabrics that are too thick. They have a tendency to be too bunchy at the neck. Making it shorter eliminates the bunchy part, but the collar still does not drape right because of the fabric thickness. So just don't buy a fabric that is too thick and if your cowl pattern is rectangular, you can make it shorter for less drape in the cowl.
I hope that made sense

I have Kwik Sew 2740, 3032 and 3036(this one is my new favorite, it's a dolman sleeve) as well as many others (including the Sewaholic Renfrew pattern). I guess I'm a patternholic, LOL. Anyway, for some reason I preferred the Renfrew over KS 2740, but it may have had something to do with my fabric choice for that particular top. I will definitely try this one again for the fall/winter season.

I think fabric choice has a lot with how overwhelming the cowl can be, however definitely try to modify according to the other ladies' suggestions if you want to use a thicker fabric.

3032 is more like a drape neck. I like Simplicity 1716 for that style. I really like 3740 and adjust the neck to suit me. It is pretty easy to cut down the cowl if you want something smaller. I raise it a bit too which is easy to do.

I am loathe to encourage the purchase of patterns (like heck I am....), but 3032 is an excellent one to have in the collection. My daughter recently sent a bedraggled 10-year-old version of the draped-neck top home with me and said "can you do another one just like it?". Just be sure to cut the top longer; for some reason, KS drafted this one way too short.
