Hi,

I have a very old pattern Simplicity 8765 ( not reviewed on PR) which can be made in either a sleeveless version or a short sleeve. It has a seam which joins the bodice to the skirt and it goes from high hip to low hip which puts the seam on the bias but the skirt still on the straight grain.

I'm wanting to make this up in a linen and am wondering if the skirt would (a) work if cut on the bias and (b) look better?

I would love to hear any opinions.

Thanks
Sue

Is this it?

I think you could do the whole thing on the bias and not even have that diagonal seam and pocket in it there, by just overlapping the top and bottom pattern pieces. If it would still fit on your fabric that way to cut it out. And that would probably make it; hang a bit skinner and longer and it might drape a lot softer.

Not sure what would happen drape wise if you kept the top part on lengthwise grain and then made the bottom part on the bias? Since it would be attached diagonally there, I think it might kind of want to "swing out" more to the right possibly just since there would be more bias fabric on that side? Maybe not though. But I think it probably would make the bottom of the skirt drape even softer and more flexible. If you have enough fabric maybe you could just make up some rough shapes for it, like only 4 or 6 inches tall instead, and play with it like that and see what happens, without having to cut the whole thing for real and find out?

You should be able to test--hold the fabric on the bias, fold along the imaginary seamline, and use large safety pins and kitchen twine to connect to a hanger so that the seamline is right. That is, different lengths of twine across the seamline. Clip to hanger with clothespins or some such. Let hang several days to see what the fabric does.

I made a bias skirt with a diagonal seam across the hip and used this method (more or less) before deciding if the fabric was suitable. Not all fabric hangs evenly on the bias, I've heard--differences in warp and weft threads.

I think the skirt would look pretty on the bias and I like that seam, so it could be worth a try!

I love the idea of the whole dress on the bias. I think it will be very comfortable.

I'll cut it out in some not so precious similar fabric and leave large seam allowances on the side seams. Hopefully it will work!
